Another brave female athlete is putting her health first. Tennis star Serena Williams has withdrawn from the U.S. Open just days before it starts due to a torn hamstring.

The 39-year-old shared the news with her followers in a statement posted to Instagram.

"After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring," the six-time U.S. Open winner wrote. "New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play — I'll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering on from afar."

She closed out the statement writing, "Thank you for your continued love and support. I'll see you soon."

The U.S. Open showed their support for the star's decision in a tweet, wishing her to "get well soon."

This past year, we've seen several courageous female athletes, like Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles, put their health — both physical and mental — first.

Osaka, who is set to compete in the U.S. Open, withdrew from the Wimbledon competition back in June, launching a conversation about the importance of mental health. Biles withdrew from several gymnastics competitions at the Tokyo Olympics for mental health reasons, and Williams also withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics due to the same ongoing injury. Williams played part of a match at Wimbledon before sustaining an injury that caused her to leave the competition.
