Serena Williams Just Dropped in on Meghan Markle & Baby Archie

Between visits from the royal family and long-awaited photo shoots, royal baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor hasn’t had a dull day yet. Last week was no exception, with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s close pal Serena Williams stopping by Frogmore Cottage for a secret visit. Reported by Daily Mail, this news has the public wondering whether Williams is up for the position of Archie’s godmother — and who else might be in line for the role.

Per Daily Mail, Williams stopped by on her way to the French Open, bringing husband Alexis Ohanion and 1-year-old daughter Olympia with her. We (tragically) don’t have pictures of Archie and Olympia’s first meeting, but we know Williams has been involved in the Sussex royals’ budding family for some time, down to helping host Meghan’s baby shower. She’s not the only American friend to drop in on baby Archie, though — close friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney was also spotted a stone’s throw from Frogmore Cottage last week, posting a telltale Instagram of her daughter at a department store close to Meghan’s home.

That isn’t to say Williams and Mulroney are in competition for the godparent title (if, in fact, that’s what these visits are about): according to royal tradition, baby Archie will have at least five godparents. Other contenders include Markus Anderson, the creative director of Soho House, who also helped arrange Meghan’s baby shower, and has been in to visit baby Archie as well. Daily Mail suggests that two of Princess Diana’s sisters (Prince Harry’s aunts) are in the running as well, along with Tom Inskip and Mark Dyer, both long-time friends of Harry’s.

We don’t yet know when Archie’s godparents will be officially announced, but one thing is clear: baby Sussex will have a star-studded set of friends and relatives wherever he goes.
