There are a lot of cool things out there that make us wonder — do they really work? In our I Tried It series, we set out to use them in the real world and have determine that, in fact, they really do.

On Trial: Sephora Collection’s Best Skin Ever Foundation

Tester: Caitlyn Fitzpatrick, a liquid foundation lover who has yet to find her perfect match

The Brief: Makeup is understandably not top of mind for many people during the pandemic. But if you’re like me, you continue to keep up the routine just to feel a tad bit normal, even if it’s only in the confinement of your home. Even on days when I don't feel like putting on a full face, foundation is the one beauty product I still reach for. These days, I’m only reaching for Sephora Collection’s Best Skin Ever Foundation.

I’ve always preferred a liquid foundation to cover breakouts. However, I’ll be the first to admit that the results don't always thrill me. Some formulas are designed to feel lightweight, but often they're too lightweight and don't provide nearly enough coverage. Others are too heavy and look cakey.

It’s a hard balance to come by, so it’s no wonder that up until now, I haven’t found a foundation that I continue to buy over and over again. Sephora Collection has thrown all my frustrations with liquid foundation out the door – it’s become my Holy Grail.
Goodbye to the five other halfway used liquid foundations in my bathroom cabinet!

Let’s talk basics. The Best Skin Ever Foundation was designed to give you that “no-makeup makeup” look that many women are after, right? The medium-coverage anti-pollution foundation is buildable, but still feels lightweight. The long-wearing formula hydrates skin for up to 12 hours, thanks to ingredients like hyaluronic acid and algae extracts. The best part about the foundation is the price point ... and skin tone matches: $20 and 50 shades.

When it comes to finding the perfect match for your skin tone, that certainly won’t be a problem. Best Skin Ever comes in 50 shades — with yellow, neutral, and pink undertones — ranging from fair to deep. When you go to Sephora’s website, you can see a list of every shade along with those undertones to help you find your match. I’m very fair with neutral to warm undertones, and tried two different options — both of which work well on me.

Personally, I put this foundation on by pumping it on a blending sponge and then using my finger to blot in any trouble spots that need heavier coverage. What makes Best Skin Ever different for me is that it's the first foundation I've put on my entire face. In the past, I only applied foundation to my T-zone, since that’s where I get breakouts. Plus, I didn’t like the idea of putting unnecessary makeup on my skin when I could just let it breathe. But Sephora Collection has created a formula that blends so beautifully and gives me such a fresh face without clogging my pores that it would be a sin not to grace my whole face with its natural finish.

“Try using our Makeup Match Foundation Brush for heavier coverage, or a fluffier brush like the PRO Foundation Brush #55 for something lighter. To mimic an airbrush finish, go over the look with a damp sponge,” said Helen Phillips, Sephora Collection’s national artist, sharing her tips. “Best Skin Ever can be set with any powder, but if you typically have settling in laugh lines, around the eyes or nose, be sure to prep with our Beauty Amplifier Eyeshadow Primer — it’s a serum so it won’t dry you out, but will ensure the makeup stays in place.”

Any regular beauty product user knows how expensive it can get to snag a quality product, so it’s almost shocking that Sephora created such an A+ foundation that only costs $20 for the 0.84-ounce bottle. No, there isn’t a catch here. It’s the deal of the century, if you ask me, and I look forward to the long, beautiful relationship I now have with Sephora Collection.

The Closing Argument: Sephora Collection’s Best Skin Ever Foundation came out in mid-January 2021, and I’m not exaggerating when I say that it’s the only foundation I’ve used since. It gives me that perfect balance of enough coverage without looking heavy or caked on. If you look up “flawless” in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of anyone’s face who uses this product.
