Senior Golden Retriever Trying to Make Friends at Dog Park Is Full of Sweetness

Dogs are social creatures. They need love and attention from everyone around them. That's why the dog park can be crucial. Just ask one Golden Retriever owner, who recently took their senior dog out and was heartbroken when the pup tried to make friends.

Goldie is a good girl, but her owner noticed how much time has passed during a recent dog park trip.

As Goldie's owner explained, the senior dog has always been friendly — and that hasn't changed a bit. But it sort of broke the dog lover's heart to see that the Golden Retriever is now one of the older dogs at the dog park.

"I remember when she was younger, she was always the favorite at dog parks because she's always been calm, sweet, and friendly to all the dogs and their parents," the owner explained in the video's text overlay. "She's the reason why my admiration and love for dogs grew deep."

People online loved Goldie and only wanted the best for the Golden. "I feel like some parks should have senior time or have a group for oldies to make friends," suggested one person. "Aww Goldie always trying her best to keep up with [her] doggo friends," another person chimed in. "Awwww poor Goldie. I would be most interested in Goldie. I have a soft spot for senior dogs, especially Goldens," a third commenter shared. "I'm crying...I cannot deal with elderly dogs playing," added someone else.

How to Help Your Senior Dog Socialize

As your dog ages, you'll want to help maintain their quality of life. And that includes giving them plenty of socialization time. That doesn't necessarily need to be at the dog park, although that's a good place to meet new dogs and give your dog some friend time.

Walks are good places to meet new dogs. If you go frequently enough your dog will experience new sights, sounds, smells, and new animals.

Having a puppy party can be another way to give your dog some quality friend time. Invite your friends over with their dogs and let the pups run around the backyard together. Or schedule a playdate and let your dog and another pup have some fun one-on-one.

Puppy daycare is another good place for dogs to meet and spend time with other canines. These programs can be sort of pricey, but they'll definitely allow your dogs to get that social energy out and have plenty of fun. You may need to let your senior rest after a daycare visit, but it could be so worth it to give them an hour or two of bliss.
