'Selling Sunset' cast member addresses why the cast dresses as over-the-top as they do: 'We're definitely glam girls'

The sixth season of Netflix’s reality show Selling Sunset dropped on May 19 and while the drama is as petty as ever and the homes as luxurious and expensive as ever, what people are really fixated on this season is the fashion.

The realtors at the Oppenheim Group have always dressed to the nines, but viewers this season seem more distracted by the outfits than impressed.

Because the women are seemingly always in full hair and makeup along with their head-to-toe designer looks, some speculated that maybe Netflix was footing the bill for the over-the-top outfits.

But new cast member Chelsea Lazkani took to TikTok to deny that the group gets any stipend of the sort.

“We get this question a lot,” she told her 87,000 followers. “We do not get a wardrobe or glam budget. This is really standard in reality TV. In reality TV you come as you please.”

Lazkani did admit that the cast tries hard to “turn it out” for the cameras.

“We’re definitely glam girls, we definitely love to glam, we love to bring the fashion,” she explained. “So we get glam to film, for the most part, every single time and it is out of our own pockets.”

While some of the cast members have stylists, Lazkani said she doesn’t.

“In the real world, you know, a whole day I’m probably just going to throw on a hoodie and show the house,” she said, laughing.

There is also speculation from fans that the pivot to more extreme fashion looks may have been inspired by former cast member, Christine Quinn. Quinn left the show at the end of the fifth season to focus more on her crypto business with her husband.

On a recent episode of the podcast The Skinny Confidential Him & Her, Quinn alleged that producers encouraged the cast to dress up.

“A very conscious choice for me in the show is I never wore two-piece bikinis,” she claimed. “There were so many fights about that. So many fights from producers and production, constantly commenting on our bodies and telling us what to wear.”

This isn’t the first time Quinn has accused producers of interfering with the authenticity of the show. In a 2020 episode of Real Housewives former cast member Brandi Glanville’s podcast, Quinn alleged that she and onscreen enemy Chrishell Stause were initially friends.

“[Producers] wanted us to clash obviously and at first, we didn’t,” Quinn said. “We got along great. We were friends. She was at my house, we were drinking, having a good time. I was getting to know her and the storylines came into play. We thought we were good at separating things.”

Whether producers actually interfere with outfits or not, the fashion this season almost seemed to distract viewers — especially when compared to the first season, which premiered in 2019.

Valentina, a TikToker who dedicates her account to recaps of reality TV shows, including Selling Sunset, called the outfits on this season “something else.”

Over the footage of different outfits from the season, Valentina added a sound bite from Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

“I’m gotta be real with you guys,” Kim Kardashian says in the audio. “You look like f***ing clowns.”

“The Christine effect lmao,” a commenter joked, referring to Quinn.

“when the season ended, Netflix auto started s1e1 and the style difference is laughable,” another person pointed out. “they are doing way too much.”
