Selena Gomez may have a friend run her Instagram account, but she is aware of the hateful comments certain people have left on her page. Gomez got creative with her acknowledgement of them-particularly Stefano Gabbana's comment that she was "ugly" that made headlines earlier this summer-by wearing the word "Ugly" written in crystals in her hair while out during New York Fashion Week. Gomez has more seriously spoken out about beauty standards and her decision to put her self-care first. She wrote on her Instagram back in March, "The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."

Last month, Footwear News published an interview with Gomez where she acknowledged that she is affected by the mean comments people leave on her social media. “I feel like I’m one of those people [whose body confidence can be shaken by trolls]," she started. "I actually am one of those people. I understand and I get what they’re [my fans are] feeling and what they are afraid of."

But Gomez makes a point to focus on herself and ignore all that noise, she said. "It’s all about how you feel at the end of the day. That’s my approach to myself, seeing it’s not okay that I’m not accepted, that I’m different from anybody else. It’s okay that I’m not accepted this way. It’s okay that I’m nice and not intense. I don’t really care [about the haters]. I have to express my message to myself more than my fans. I would say [to my fans] that ‘I get it, I’m like you.’"
