Selena Gomez fires back at bikini body shamers on Instagram

The past several months have been a roller coaster for Selena Gomez. In addition to breaking up with the Weeknd, the pop star, who has lupus, underwent a kidney transplant during the summer, which presented potentially fatal complications.

Now, in the midst of rumors that she has split up with on-off boyfriend Justin Bieber, she’s finally taking time for herself. The former Disney star was photographed yachting with friends around Australia’s Sydney Harbor this week.

The paparazzi photos of the outing show Gomez basking in the sun in a bikini, scars from her recent surgery on display. Although many fans have celebrated her recovery, there’s been a fair amount of body shaming as well, with some critics mocking her scars and apparent weight gain.

Now the “Hands to Myself” singer is addressing the attention with a post calling out the “beauty myth” and the public’s “obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty.” She also included film footage from her trip.

In other words, she’s not here for body shaming, speculation about her scars, or comments accusing her of covering her stomach with her hands out of self-consciousness. She’s just trying to live her life and be healthy. Any questions?
