Selena Gomez Shared Some Relatable Advice With the Graduating Class of 2020

The class of 2020 hasn't quite had the senior year they imagined, as many schools across the U.S. have shifted to distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While the time-honored graduation ceremony may be taking place virtually, organizations, communities, and even celebrities have come together to make this rite of passage as special as possible, despite the strange circumstances.

As noted by JustJared Jr., Selena Gomez was one such celebrity offering advice and inspiration to the class of 2020. The actor and musician gave a virtual speech via Facebook's #Graduation2020: Facebook and Instagram Celebrate the Class of 2020, and kept it very real and relatable for this year's class of seniors.

“When people ask me what I would tell my younger self, I always said, ‘Go ahead and do it.’ You all have worked incredibly hard to get to this point and I know it’s not exactly how you imagined your graduation to look like,” Selena said. “I want to say it’s okay not to know what to do with the rest of your life. It’s a journey to find your direction or your passions, so don’t get frustrated by the mistakes and setbacks as they happen to all of us.”

"Oprah ... said you don’t become what you want, you become what you believe. I think that really resonates as if you don’t believe in yourself, don’t expect others to believe in your abilities.” Selena finished her speech by telling the seniors to stay safe and to stay connected with friends and loved ones, and sent her congrats.

Selena wasn't the only megastar sending her best wishes to the class of 2020. Miley Cyrus also stopped by the virtual ceremony to perform her iconic song "The Climb," which has been used at graduations since it was released in 2009. "I’m truly honored to celebrate each and every one of you high school and college seniors and all that you’ve accomplished,” Miley shared, standing at a glittery gold podium with huge "2020" balloons behind her. “As I was thinking about you, the class of 2020 and how you inspire me, I knew I wanted to share this song with you. It feels full of a new meaning. Keep the faith, keep on moving, keep climbing."

What a way to move into a new phase of life — with two Disney Channel superstars sending you best wishes and congratulations! Congrats to the class of 2020 from all of us at Teen Vogue.
