Selena Gomez Says She “Freefell” Into Her Personal Style
With the release of Rare and news of her forthcoming beauty line, Selena Gomez is already off to an incredible 2020. To celebrate, the star is opening up about her journey in music, fashion, and beauty to a whole variety of interviewers — from fellow actors like Timotheé Chalamet to her biggest fans and fashion designers.
In a new interview with Dazed, Selena shared that her journey into her personal style has been rather unexpected. Speaking to designer Nicolas Ghesquière, creative director of Louis Vuitton, Selena addressed how her personal style and role in fashion have changed over the years.
“You have such individual taste in fashion and became a style icon at a very early age. Can you please tell me more about your path to discovering your style?" Ghesquière, who has worked with Selena before (he dressed her for the Met Gala in 2016) asked. Selena's answer is short and sweet but totally relatable. "I have to say that I was pretty much freefalling!" she replied, laughing.
Of course, Selena’s not entirely true, of course. Over the years, we've seen a major style evolution from Sel. While she's always gravitated towards simple, elegant silhouettes like strapless cocktail dresses, long coats, and fitted pants, often in jewel tones or rich cream shades, Selena has become more and more confident in her sartorial choices. She always looks just like herself on the red carpet and off, whether she's mixing prints or rocking over-the-top music video fashions from Fendi. She's even tried her hand at designing in the past, working with the likes of Coach and Puma.
Selena also shared that looking back at some of her early style moments does make her cringe, which is totally natural — we feel the same way when #ThrowbackThursday comes around. When asked about the cringeworthy moments of her past, Selena answered, "My style of music and my style in general. It was just not a great combination."
