Selena Gomez finally dropped new music, and fans fully think it’s about Justin Bieber

Update, October 23rd, 9:30 a.m. EDT: It’s here! Selena Gomez just dropped a brand new song, “Lose You to Love Me.” It’s her first since 2018’s “Back to You,” and fans are already busy dissecting the lyrics. Gomez started hinting at new music last week all over her Instagram feed, and now that the single is here, it’s just as moody and soulful as she promised. (And also, um, probably about her relationship with Justin Bieber? We’re just saying.)

Let’s break down some of those “Lose You to Love Me” lyrics that fans have their eyes laser-focused on.

“I saw the signs and I ignored it / Rose-colored glasses all distorted / Set fire to my purpose / And I let it burn / You got off on the hurtin’ / When it wasn’t yours, yeah,” Gomez sings. (Did you notice that little “purpose” shoutout? That happens to be the name of Bieber’s 2015 album.)

The song continues: “In two months you replaced us like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it in the thick of healing.” This sure feels like a reference to Bieber’s quick engagement and marriage to now-Hailey Bieber after his split from Gomez.

At least, that’s the way many fans see it.

Gomez also dropped a black-and-white video for “Lose You to Love Me” that was shot entirely on an iPhone.

Now, excuse us—we have to go listen to this on repeat while we wait for the full album.

Update, October 18th, 2:15 p.m. EDT: Sound the alarm because Selena Gomez is officially dropping a new song. Even better? It’s coming next week. Yes, you heard that right.

The singer, actress, and producer made the announcement today, October 18th, on Instagram that “Lose You to Love Me” will drop October 23rd. We’re freaking out. The post included what seems to be the black-and-white cover art for the single, plus the caption, “I needed to lose you to love me.”

The song will likely be part of a promised new album, which would be her first studio album since 2015’s Revival.

Back in June, Gomez revealed that she had completed the album but didn’t give any further details, except some ideas on the sounds we could expect. The record should have all the pop sounds that we expect from the artist, but with some more “soulful” and even acoustic guitar tracks.

We’ll be listening to all our favorite Gomez songs as we impatiently wait out the next five days.

Original post: June 12th: Selena Gomez has been teasing fans with the promise of a new album since 2017. Two years ago she dropped mega-hits “Fetish” and “Bad Liar.” Then in 2018, she released “Back To You”—another hit. We’ve been chomping at the bit waiting for her next album, and thankfully, she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 11th to confirm that it’s finally complete. Yes, we’re screaming.

When Fallon asked if Gomez was working on a new album, she responded, “I’m actually done.”

And she’s not kidding: These past few years have been tumultuous for Gomez, to say the least. She went through a kidney transplant, mental wellness issues, and two breakups (one with The Weeknd, the other with Justin Bieber). She also executive produced Netflix’s hit drama series 13 Reasons Why.

We can understand why Gomez feels relieved to finally translate all those emotions into music.

As far as style goes, Gomez confirmed that it has a similar pop vibe to most of her music. But she experimented more with electric and acoustic guitar, and “soulful tracks underneath things.”

With so much emotion packed into a single album, we know that we’re going to feel some things upon first listen. Selena, the album drop cannot come soon enough.
