Selena Gomez is Vogue Australia's cover star, and she did not hold back when discussing the meaning of her 2020 album, Rare. The album carries significant meaning for Selena, who has the title tattooed on her neck. That same year, Rare even became the namesake of her beauty brand.

"I think most of my experiences in relationships have been cursed," she said. "I’ve been way too young to be exposed to certain things when I was in relationships. I guess I needed to find what was that word for me, because I felt so less than in past relationships, and never really felt equal."

Selena explained that the word "rare" described a life she wanted to live rather than what she was already experiencing.

"It wasn’t even necessarily like: 'Oh, I feel that way, let me sing it.' It was almost like: 'Actually, I need to feel that way about myself,'" she said. She also said that she feels that her family and chosen family are composed of "real people."

Rare was released in January 2020 and became Selena's third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 Chart. Its lead single "Lose You To Love Me" also became Selena's first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is allegedly an anecdote from the singer's relationship with Justin Bieber, who she dated on and off since 2011.

Since the release of Rare, Selena dropped her first Spanish EP, Revelación and starred in the upcoming Hulu series, Only Murders in the Building. She also performed at the UCL Champions League final opening ceremony with Marshmello and hosted Global Citizen's Vax Live event to bring awareness to COVID-19 vaccine distribution.
