Selena Gomez Is Not Impressed With This Upside-Down Braid Hack for Wavy Hair

Now that Selena Gomez's hair is super-long again she hasn't wasted any time doing the most with it. Did you see that incredible two-tone braid she wore in her new "Look at Her Now" music video? But braids aren't always the end result — sometimes they're the means to getting gorgeous waves, which is exactly what Selena attempted to do on her Instagram Stories. (If you ask her, she didn't succeed.)

Over the weekend, Selena started recording video almost as soon as she woke up, noting that her grandparents were staying with her. "I had to put the pretty filter on 'cause I'm lookin' rough," Selena says while using Instagram's Golden Hour filter, which warms, softens, and adds virtual eyelashes. But it doesn't do much to hide a huge, messy, loose braid that she has flopping to one side, barely held in place by a blue scrunchie. As her Papa films her, she explains why her hair is in that state.

"What I was trying to say is that I saw this online, where you're supposed to flip your hair and braid it, and then it's supposed to come out, like, amazing," Selena says, acting out the motions of flipping over and braiding her hair while her head is upside down. "So, let's see."

Selena flips her hair upside down again to undo the braid, but before the viewer can see the results, she has already typed "Smh 🤦🏻‍♀️" to indicate that she's not impressed. She flips back over to reveal what looks like quite lovely beachy waves, asking her Papa, "How does it look?" His response? "Nope."

In the next front-facing shot, Selena laments the hack, saying, "Man, girls be lyin', sayin' do it yourself, it's so easy, it's so pretty." She then makes an incredulous face before saying, "No."

Although it really doesn't look bad at all (it's actually quite pretty), we can understand that Selena was disappointed if she used YouTuber Shonagh Scott's tutorial from earlier this year as a guide; Scott's result was noticeably wavier. But we don't know if Selena went through every one of Scott's steps, which started with applying IGK's Thirsty Girl Coconut Milk Leave-In Conditioner to wet hair and using a blow-dryer to get her hair 90 percent dry before flipping her head over to create the braid.
