Selena Gomez Looked Back on Her “Embarrassing” Fashion Moments

Selena Gomez is taking a trip down sartorial memory lane. The star recently sat down with Vogue to film her own Life in Looks video and got to revisit some of her best — and most embarrassing — fashion moments ever.

First on the list is her “embarrassing" look from 2007. The look in question features white knee-high boots over skinny jeans and a graphic black and white tee. “It's so bad… I thought I was so cool,” Sel says of the ‘fit. “But in my defense, it was very Paramore, Ashley Simpson days… and I’m not apologetic about that phase in my life I just don't want to ever see it again.” Sel goes on to say that this was an era when she used to style herself and do her own hair and makeup. “Which you can tell,” she explains. "I felt cool at the time... I didn't have all this fancy stuff around me and I thought that made me pretty edgy," she reminisces.

Selena also revisits the look she wore in the "Love You Like a Love Song" music video and says the jeweled strapless dress was a big deal for her at the time. "It was the first time I tried to be 'high fashion,'" she jokes. "You can laugh because that's not high fashion." Selena then went on to say that her BFF Taylor Swift was a major inspiration for her. "To be honest, when I was younger Taylor inspired me a lot when it comes to wardrobe and stage outfits," she said. However, don't count on her to bring the “Love You Like a Love Song” dress back anytime soon. It's staying in the past, Selena says.

But not every look makes Selena cringe looking back. The Versace dress with a high slit and bustier top Selena wore to the 2013 VMAs is one of her favorites — and gave her a confidence boost as she moved from child star to adult actor and musician. "I love this dress," she says. "I remember ... feeling like a woman. I remember trying this on and the first thing my stylist said, 'Is this too sexy?'" Selena reflected. "I didn't have any doubt in my mind. I said, 'The dress isn't about being sexy. The dress is a statement. It's going to feel like I'm carrying this Versace piece of art down the red carpet.' It was one of the first times I felt like I was feeling myself."

Another major red carpet moment is the white Vera Wang dress Selena wore to the 2015 Met Gala. The dress was something she worked closely with the designer to create, and it helped her embrace her body. "I fluctuate a lot with my weight ... I didn't feel amazing about my body," Selena said. "What was really amazing was that I got a chance to work on the dress that fit my body. I had such a beautiful time shaping this dress. I think that we came together and built something beautiful and something that fit me really well."

Later in the video, Selena revisits the Givenchy red sequin shift she wore to the 2015 AMAs, the Louis Vuitton dress and boots she wore to the 2016 Met Gala (which she calls one of her "top five" looks ever), a Britney Spears-inspired Revival tour ensemble, a red Prada gown that she wore for her red carpet "comeback," and a casual look with a dino Coach sweater that Selena says she "overwore" because she loved it so much. "I think my everyday life is classic, but I'm also such a character that it depends on what character I am that day," she shared.

Also included in her style journey is her 2017 Vogue cover, which she has framed in her home, a Celine look for The Dead Don't Die premiere, a glam PJs-and-sneakers look she wore to dinner, and a lime Versace mini she wore to the 2019 AMAs. "This I felt so good in," she said. The Rodarte dress she wore for "De Una Vez" is also part of the retrospective, and signifies Selena's commitment to her Mexican heritage. "I may not be fluent [in Spanish], but I'll never forget where I'm from. It's important for me to embrace those moments through fashion and music," she said.

While Selena may have experienced a few bumps on her style journey, it's clear she's got it down now — and that all those missteps and cringe-worthy moments helped her shape herself into the icon she is today.
