Selena Gomez Lends Her Support for Hurricane Harvey Victims

With Hurricanes Harvey and Irma bringing an unprecedented amount of devastation to the southern United States, many celebrities are stepping up to provide assistance.

Selena Gomez, for instance, was one of the many stars on hand for the televised Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey this week, choosing to speak on behalf of the Saldivar family, who lost many family members when the storm surge hit Houston and swept away their van. Being a Texas native, Selena spoke from the heart while relaying the family's tragic circumstance and also encouraged everyone watching the benefit to donate any amount of money possible — big or small, $1 or $100.

"Their story affected all who heard it, and no matter who we are, the differences we have, suddenly did not seem to matter," Selena explained in her short segment. "Since that day, we have joined together. Neighbor helping neighbor, without stopping to think about race, religion, and anything else. If we are going to get through all the storms that confront us, that's how we're going to do it together, hand in hand."

Also on hand for the fundraiser was fellow Houston native Beyoncé, who similarly made an impassioned plea for donations. (Prior to the fundraiser, she even met with Harvey survivors in Houston and assisted at a shelter with her daughter, Blue.) "Natural disasters don't discriminate. They don’t see if you're an immigrant, black or white, Hispanic or Asian, Jewish or Muslim, wealthy or poor," she said in her segment, urging people to send food and supplies to local Texas shelters. "We're all in this together . . . we have to be prepared for what comes next."
