Selena Gomez Just Took the Hair Bow Trend to the Next Level

With perhaps the biggest bow we've ever seen.

It's safe to say that coquette details like bows, pearls, and anything that might remind you of Lana Del Rey defined 2023. Celebs like Elle Fanning, Hailey Bieber, and Sabrina Carpenter have all implemented some form of the hyper-fem aesthetic into their wardrobes, beauty routines, and red-carpet appearances. However, as of December 7, Selena Gomez might just top them all with her oversized hair bow.

In an Instagram story shared with her hundreds of millions of followers, Gomez posted a mirror selfie at her vanity. With a handful of Rare Beauty products scattered on the table in front of her, she posed while wearing what may be the world's largest hair bow in her hair.

Her hairstyle was rather simple, save for the over-the-top accessory. Without any loose strands, all of her hair was slicked down and pulled back. On the back of her head, where the bun or ponytail would be, sat a large black bow bigger than her face. Unlike popular coquette bows, Gomez's was very structured and stiff, and the loose ends were short. The lack of softness actually gave the bow an edgier feel that made perfect sense with the rest of her outfit.

Though Gomez's rendition of coquette is a little different than most, its rise in popularity comes as we "reclaim what it means to be 'girly' and ditching any negative connotations of the word," Cat Quinn, executive director of global trend at MAC Cosmetics, previously told us. "It's re-interpreted for the female gaze, inclusive to all, and a little tongue-in-cheek, which immediately makes it feel cool, fresh, and modern—and less Toddlers and Tiaras."

Gomez paired the bow with a fitted black leather dress with hardware details. On the straps of the dress were matching silver buckle details with silver buttons continuing over her shoulders. Around her wrists were leather cuffs with large silver belt buckles intertwined in it.

A simple makeup look finished off the outfit. Her skin was glowy and dewy, with a heavy touch of blush on her cheeks. Her eyelids had a glossy shimmer to them with light eyeliner and a coat or two of mascara. Her eyebrows were sculpted, and her lips were the perfect matte pink. The finishing touch being a glossy "your nails but better" manicure.
