Selena Gomez Just Said the Sweetest Thing About Demi Lovato

Selena Gomez just threw some good vibes Demi Lovato’s way—despite what we’ve heard about their most recent friendship status.

Just one day after Lovato released her latest heartbreak jam, “Still Have Me,” Gomez was featured in a promo video for YouTube Music praising her former Disney BFF. “I think we have some of the best lyricists in the game right now,” Gomez said, per Us Weekly. “Dua and Ariana, Taylor, Demi—these artists are just lifting up the game with their lyrics. It makes me so happy.”

However, Lovato hasn't always been interested in Gomez's public declarations of affection. Though the two have known each other since their Barney days, Lovato declared this April—in no uncertain terms—that the two were “not friends."

Rewind. In January 2020 (which literally feels like three years ago), Demi Lovato performed a new ballad, “Anyone,” at the 2020 Grammys—her first performance since her 2018 overdose. She pretty much tore the roof down, and Selena Gomez took to Instagram Stories to congratulate her.

“I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was. Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery,” Gomez wrote at the time.

Though it was a sweet gesture, Lovato wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. “When you grow up with somebody, you’re always going to have love for them. But I’m not friends with her, so it felt…,” she told Harper’s Bazaar, reportedly stopping herself mid-thought. “I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.”

Of course, it’s hard to imagine that Lovato would get put off by being described as one of the “best lyricists in the game,” especially after releasing such a beautiful new song. She’s also currently going through a somewhat messy breakup from her ex-fiancé, Max Ehrich, so she deserves all the positive affirmations she can get. Who knows, maybe the former friends can work towards building their relationship back up. We need a duet.
