Selena Gomez and Francia Raísa's friendship shifted long before most fans took notice.

Though the supposed falling out occurred in November 2022, you have to go all the way back to 2017 to get the full picture. In September of that year, Gomez revealed to the world that she had received a kidney from her longtime friend after a years-long battle with Lupus. “There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend, Francia Raísa,” Gomez wrote on Instagram at the time. “She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

The actors seemingly remained close for years until Gomez referred to Taylor Swift as her “only friend in the industry” in a profile for Rolling Stone in November 2022. A few social media comments by both parties and an Instagram unfollow from Raísa later, it seemed the women had ended their friendship. However, Gomez extended an olive branch to Raísa on the How I Met Your Father star’s 35th birthday by posting an Instagram tribute to her former bestie and kidney donor.

Eight months later after that unfollow, Raísa finally followed Gomez back on Instagram before reuniting with the pop star in August. Raísa opened up about their reconciliation in a December interview with USA Today, revealing that they "hadn't spoken much in six years” before Gomez reached out. Here’s a complete timeline of Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa’s alleged falling out.

2007–2017: Raísa and Gomez meet when they’re placed in the same group on a Disney-ABC-mandated trip to the Children’s Hospital in 2007. “I love [Gomez] to death. She’s my sister, and she is one of the sweetest girls I know,” Raisa tells Wetpaint in 2012. “She is so caring and so loving and so nurturing. She’s awesome. I don’t know where she came from.”

In 2015, Gomez even gives Raísa a necklace that says “a sister is a forever friend.”

June 2017: Raísa donates her kidney to Gomez, who was diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune disease Lupus in 2015.

September 14, 2017: Gomez tells her fans about her kidney transplant.

In her own since-deleted post, Raísa writes, “I am beyond grateful that God would trust me with something that not only saved a life, but changed mine in the process. This was part of our story, and we will share it soon, but what is important now is that this is not the only story.” Raisa ends her post by writing, “Love you sis, so glad we’re on this journey together.”

February 16, 2018: Raísa calls Gomez “family” during an interview about her surgery. “[Selena] felt bad about even having me do that because we are just friends—I am not her family or anything. Well, I am now. She has my blood,” she tells Harry Connick Jr. “I lost my grandparents when I was younger…her grandparents are my grandparents now, and so I have this extension of a family and it’s been really amazing.”

November 2, 2022: Gomez releases her vulnerable documentary My Mind and Me, which was filmed from 2016 to 2020. Fans quickly notice that Raísa is not featured, sparking arguments online.

November 3, 2022: Rolling Stone publishes a profile of Gomez with the following quote: “I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong.”

November 4, 2022: Per fan screenshots, Raísa writes “interesting” in the comments section of an E! News Instagram post about the quote, though the comment has since been deleted. She also unfollowed Gomez from Instagram.

November 6, 2022: In response to a TikTok video breaking down the supposed drama, Gomez replies, “Sorry I didn’t mention every person I know.”

Fans quickly start picking sides, some calling Gomez “ungrateful” while others accuse Raisa of donating her kidney “for clout.”

February 13, 2023: Raísa hints at how the discourse has affected her in an interview with Glamour. “Whatever, I’ll talk about it: I get snakes on my Instagram comments a lot that I’m, I don’t know, using certain people for fame,” she says. “If I had that in me, I would’ve been famous a long time ago. Those little things that get written about me, they’re hurtful. I do my best to try to ignore and avoid it. I deleted my Twitter because I couldn’t handle it.”

March 10, 2023: During an episode of the Apple TV+ documentary series Dear…, Gomez describes Raísa as her “best friend” while reflecting on their shared experience. “My best friend. Her name is Francia. She said, ‘No, I am absolutely getting tested,’” Gomez says, per People. “And within three days, she went to get tested, and she was a match. And it was one of those moments where I felt watched over. I know I was so so so lucky.”

Gomez also says she feels “in debt” to Raísa. “I understand that that doesn’t happen for a lot of people, and I know the outcome of some of those situations and how serious they are, so I do not take it lightly that it’s happened to me that way,” she said. “I will never ever, ever be more in debt to a person than Francia. The idea of someone not even second-guessing to be a donor was unbelievably overwhelming.”

May 6, 2023: Raísa describes the graphic hate comments and threats she receives online to TMZ. This comes not long after Gomez had to ask fans to stop sending death threats to Hailey Bieber online following some other drama (which you can read about here.)

Gomez was the first to reach out. “I don't know why the universe decided this timing,” Raísa says. "Then she reached out and said, 'Let's talk.'"

While they are back in each other's lives, Raísa says they're “still getting to know each other again.”

Francia Raísa says she's “still getting to know” her former bestie.

“We've never really had beef with each other. Nothing happened, and if you ask either of us, we don't know what happened but we needed that time apart,” Raísa continues. “Then when you come back together, you're better people.”

Of the public scrutiny, she says, "And obviously, you know, I gave the girl a kidney so everyone felt a certain way and I was asked for years and years and years, 'Do you regret it?' and I was like, 'No, the relationship has always been there.' There was just a tiff."
