Selena Gomez Fans Are Not Happy Justin Bieber Gave Her a Shoutout in ‘Popstar’

Selena Gomez is probably too busy with the launch of Rare Beauty to notice that Justin Bieber gave her a shoutout in his newest video—but that doesn’t mean fans missed it.

To clarify, Bieber didn’t actually say anything—he just lip-synced all of Drake’s parts in DJ Khaled’s newest video for “Popstar,” which dropped on September 3.

At the top of the video, Khaled is blowing up Drake’s phone, practically begging him to shoot the video for their new collab. “This guy’s off his rocker. I just, I don’t know what to say. It’s every waking moment that I’m alive,” Drake complains, before deciding to call in a favor. “It’s like you give someone everything you have, and they’re just like, ‘Another one.’” LOL.

“It’s like, I can’t do a video,” Drake continues. “I can’t even make my own album in peace.” That’s where Bieber comes in. You can watch the full music video, below.

Some fans were absolutely living for this moment. “Justin Bieber runs the popstar game and Drake knows it,” one fan tweeted.

Meanwhile, others couldn’t get over Bieber’s transformation over the years.

However, some viewers were not so happy with one particular verse that Bieber performed. “I’m a popstar, but this shit ain’t bubblegum, yeah. You would probably think my manager is Scooter Braun, yeah,” Bieber mouths at one point. “But my manager with 20 hoes in Buddakan, yeah, ayy. Look, Ariana, Selena, my Visa. It can take as many charges as it needs to, my girl.
That shit platinum just like all of my releases, my girl.”

The lyric itself is not defamatory, but considering Bieber and Gomez’s previous relationship—which Gomez has described as emotionally abusive—people had thoughts: “2020 and Justin Bieber still has Selena Gomez’s name in his mouth,” one Twitter user wrote.

“One thing about Justin Bieber is that he’ll always find a way to get himself involved in anything Selena is apart of,” another tweeted on September 4.

Even Bieber has admitted he “abused” his previous relationships in an Instagram post from September 2019, writing, “I became resentful, disrespectful to women and angry.”

In a later interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the singer claimed he worked on himself before marrying Hailey Baldwin Bieber. “In my previous relationship, I went off and just went crazy and went wild, just was being reckless,” he said in February 2020. “This time I took the time to really build myself and focus on me, and try to make the right decisions and all that sort of stuff. And yeah, I got better.”
