Selena Gomez Fans Are Going Wild Over Her Fake 2023 Met Gala Look That Went Viral on Twitter

Sorry, folks. It may have appeared that Selena Gomez graced the 2023 Met Gala red carpet, but sadly this wasn't the case.

The ultra-exclusive fashion event came and went, and names like Olivia Wilde, Anne Hathaway and Jenna Ortega attended with a theme dedicated to the late Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld. As fans followed the celebrity arrivals on social media, many were shocked when they heard that the Only Murders in the Building star showed up to the annual Hollywood event at the last minute. What's more, a fan account posted side-by-side photos of the actress appearing to wear an edgy one-shoulder blue see-through gown with a deep keyhole neckline and high slit.

"SELENA GOMEZ DID A SURPRISE APPEARANCE AT THE #MetGala WTF," read the caption on Twitter on May 1.

When fans of the Rare Beauty founder noticed the account's post, they made the picture immediately go viral with over 14 million views. What's more, people couldn't stop commenting about how beautiful she looked in the bejeweled dress. But one eagle-eyed follower realized something was off and began deep diving into whether Selena actually showed up to the Met Gala.

After a bit of sleuthing, folks learned that sadly, Selena did not attend the Met Gala and the pictures circulating were edited. The person in the original snap was actually actress Lily James, who wore the look during the 2022 fashion event. Understandably, many couldn't help feeling disappointed after discovering the truth.

"THIS WAS ALL A LIE," one person wrote in the post's Twitter comments. "Nah why does this look so real 😭😭," another added. "She won even without attending 😭😭😭❤️," a follower said.

Still, lots of fans applauded the photos for the fashion inspiration it provided. "This edit [though] 🔥," someone else chimed in. "Oh my god this is seamless editing, [I don't even care] if it’s fake. My eyes are eating it up," a different fan commented.

As far as why Selena didn't pop up at the Met Gala, it's likely due to the fact that she recently wrapped Only Murders in the Building season 3. Couple that with being busy promoting her popular beauty brand, it checks out that she would use her free time to work on other projects.
