Selena Gomez is booked and busy, but she’ll never be too busy for Wizards of Waverly Place.

On January 18, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline reported that Gomez will be executive-producing a revival of her hit Disney Channel series with former costar David Henrie. While Disney Channel has only ordered a pilot of the reboot so far, Henrie is set to star in the new series, with Gomez appearing as Alex Russo in the first episode.

According to THR, the new Wizards of Waverly Place picks up with an adult Justin Russo (Henrie) attempting to lead a magic-free life with his family until “a young wizard (Janice LeAnn Brown of Disney’s Just Roll With It) finds him and asks him for help in both training and ensuring the future of the wizard world.”

“So excited,” Gomez wrote alongside the Deadline announcement on Instagram Stories before sharing a throwback photo with Henrie from the series with the caption, “We’re back.” Gomez first starred in the magical family sitcom from 2007 to 2012, as well as two made-for-TV films, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie (2009) and The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex (2013).

Though no other members of the OG Russo family have officially signed on for the reboot yet, Henrie responded to fan concerns on Instagram. “We definitely plan on bringing back the original cast for the series order,” he promised in one comment, per screenshots. Currently, Mimi Gianopulos and Alkaio Theile are set to star as Justin’s wife and son.

Magic

And yep, Stevie, played by Hayley Kiyoko, would have been her GF.

Since leaving the Disney Channel series, Selena Gomez went on to become a full-fledged pop star and beauty mogul alongside her thriving acting career. The 31-year-old has starred in films like Spring Breakers (2012) and her current hit Hulu series, Only Murders in the Building. Oh yeah, and she executive-produced a little show called 13 Reasons Why (2017–2020).

Earlier this month it was announced that Gomez’s film and music careers will collide when she stars as Linda Ronstadt in the singer’s upcoming biopic. Like I said, booked and busy.
