In the words of the iconic Wizards of Waverly Place theme song, "everything is not what it seems" for Selena Gomez's character on Only Murders in the Building, whom the actress recently said reminded her of a previous part she played.

That's right! Alex Russo is back — err, in spirit at least. In an episode for Entertainment Weekly's series "The Awardist" Selena shared that Mabel from OMITB and Alex have similar souls. "I feel like Mabel is an older version of Alex in a way," she said.

While her transition from Disney darling to Hulu hottie seemed to gradually happen overnight, with nine years having passed between the end of Wizards of Waverly Place and the start of OMITB, Selena says that she "a thousand percent" used skills she picked up during her time as Alex while filming the mystery-comedy show.

And Gomez still looks back at her time on Wizards of Waverly Place with a great deal of fondness. "I adored being on that show so much," she said "I felt like I did learn a lot."

Speaking about the behind-the-scenes, production staff of the Disney show, Selena said "We actually had great writers — we had two writers that were on Friends — and we had an incredible director that we used for most of our seasons."

"We got really lucky," she added, "I still look back at that and laugh at certain things just because I thought it was so fun, and we tried."

Working her way up to a lead role in a hit Disney Channel show took some time, with Selena making guest appearances on Barney & Friends and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody before landing the big role. But the opportunity to sign onto OMITB came about a bit differently.

The Rare Beauty founder said she wanted to "take some time for my true love, which is film and TV," and the Hulu series seemed like the perfect place to stretch her comedic wings, so to speak.

"I'm not sure I was looking for a series, I was just looking for something in general," she says. "This was just honestly a wonderful surprise. [My team and I] got the material and responded right away, and I thought it was so cool."

"I definitely didn't think it would do this well," she added, "but I'm definitely happy."
