Selena Gomez dropped “Single Soon,” on Friday, and despite the fact that she hasn’t dated anyone publicly since 2018, some fans dug into her relationship history to find a song subject. They settled on The Weeknd, who Gomez dated from January 2017 to October 2017, right before getting back together with then on-off ex Justin Bieber for a couple of months. Some media outlets reported on the fan speculation, and Gomez made her thoughts known about that.

The singer commented on Hollywood Life’s Instagram post promoting their story on the fan theory, writing, “Couldn’t be more false.”

If the song was, in fact, inspired by a specific person, it’s highly unlikely that fans will be able to guess who they are. Gomez teased in November that her new music would explore the secret relationships she’s had since spring 2018, when she became single again. “I created this whole private life that was just mine, and I feel like now I have to tell these stories, and people are going to ask a lot of questions,” Gomez admitted.

After their breakup in November 2017, Gomez spoke warmly about The Weeknd and their relationship to Billboard. “The best part [of being single]?” Gomez said. “It’s actually... you know what, though? Something that I’m really proud of is that there’s such a true friendship [between me and The Weeknd]. I truly have never experienced anything like that in my life. We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other], and that was pretty remarkable for me.”
