Selena Gomez's New Puma Collab Is a Cool-Girl Take on the Dad Sneaker
Hot on the heels of the launch her Selena Gomez x Coach collection, Selena Gomez is getting ready to drop her next fashion collaboration, and this one is for a good cause.
Selena has teamed up with Puma for the second time as the face of their DEFY Sneaker, sales of which will help support Lupus research. “To see the final product of something that you’ve worked on is a surreal feeling. I’m so happy that people will be able to wear something I’ve designed, I hope everyone will love it as much as I do,” Selena told Teen Vogue of creating the DEFY x SG. “PUMA has decided to commemorate this launch and our one year anniversary by donating to a fund I started to support Lupus Research, which I am so grateful”
This mission is a personal one for Selena, who underwent a kidney transplant last year in relation to her own battle with Lupus. Since then, she's been outspoken about the need to raise awareness about the disease, which the Mayo Clinic defines as "a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs." Her first collaboration with Puma, the Phenom Lux shoe, raised over $100,000 for Lupus research, and here's hoping she can do it again.
In a recent interview with Footwear News, she revealed why the latest iteration of her line is so important to her. “The whole point is to take the focus away from me; it’s about what I believe in and what I choose to do with the platform I’m given,” she said, noting that the initials "SG" stand for both "Selena Gomez" and "Strong Girls". “It’s much bigger than me and it’s much bigger than Puma."
Not only does the DEFY x SG sneaker support a good cause, but it's also something you'll actually want to wear. The grey, textured design is equal parts athletic and "cool dad" shoe, taking cues from both the athleisure and normcore trends. The shoe drops on September 18, and you better believe we will be the first in line.
