Selena Gomez executive-produced Netflix's new hit show 13 Reasons Why, which is based on Jay Asher's bestselling novel and centers on the aftermath of a high school student's suicide. The teen (played by Katherine Langford in the series) leaves behind 13 cassette tapes that explain, in excruciating detail, why she chose to take her own life. 13 Reasons Why covers several tough issues in an unflinchingly honest way, including depression, bullying, suicide, and slut-shaming. Gomez—who, at one point, was slated to play Hannah before eventually deciding to stay behind the camera—has made it clear in interviews that the show is important and personal to her. (When production began last year, Gomez was seeking treatment for lupus-triggered anxiety and depression.) So it should come as no surprise that she wanted to keep a part of 13 Reasons Why on her, physically, forever—in the form of a tattoo.
Selena Gomez revealed on Instagram Stories on Sunday (April 9) that she and two of the 13 Reasons Why cast members, Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman, received matching semicolon tattoos. There's some weighty significance behind this punctuation, too: According to E! Online, semicolons have come to represent suicide prevention and mental health awareness. The Daily Signal breaks down the symbolism like this: Imagine your life is a sentence; instead of ending it definitively with a period, you use a semicolon and seek the guidance necessary to keep writing the sentence.
The trio's tattoos are very much in line with 13 Reasons Why's story, which depicts several of Hannah's peers grappling with what they could've done to prevent her suicide. See their ink for yourself, courtesy of a fan Twitter account, below:
13 Reasons Why is currently streaming on Netflix right now in its entirety. If you're dealing with depression or suicidal thoughts, you can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline anytime at 1-800-273-8255.
