"Not having any architectural interest was a challenge, but I managed to create my own with the headboard wall as well as with what seems like a 'built-in' but is really a ready-made, renter-friendly dining nook," she continues. "I’d describe this apartment as Palm Springs-Inspired meets California Casual (ya know…CB2 vibes)," Wackerman describes. "Because this apartment was located directly in the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, I wanted the space to feel like a resort-like escape. Palm Springs is one of my favorite places in the world because the design there is so bold and is full of risks." "It also just happened to be the go-to escape for old Hollywood stars, so it seemed like the perfect style for our Hollywood oasis. So you’ll notice throughout the apartment that I added lots of Palm Springs touches while keeping the color palette relatively neutral (which in my opinion was critical in a space so small with a lot visually going on already!)." Wackerman says that her favorite element in the space is a "a toss up between my DIY Headboard wall and that dining nook. The headboard wall was inspired by the Pink Cabana restaurant in Palm Springs (designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard) and the dining nook was inspired by Gracias Madre in West Hollywood." “The natural light, new appliances, and ease of living was what drew me to this place,” begins Mallory Wackerman, an interior designer and content creator specializing in design for small spaces. Wackerman explains that this was the first apartment she moved to after college, and it was close to the Emily Henderson Design office, where she began her interior design career.
“My life was dramatically different when we first moved in to now, and the space had to shift with us,” she writes of the home she shared with her boyfriend, Chase Del Rey. “I began working from home, we got really into entertaining, and designing this space became the center of my work.”
Because the couple shared only 500 square feet, they had to get creative to maximize the space they did have, to make it work for when they had friends over, and to find as much storage as possible.
“My favorite tips for maximizing storage in a small space that I used in this studio apartment are as follows: Get a bed with legs (at least 6-7” tall!). This was a game-changer for storing suitcases, extra clothing, yoga mats, or pretty much any random thing you don’t know what to do with! Also, use your vertical space (in my closet I hung a vertical shoe rack on the wall that really changed the game). And storage furniture is key! My dining nook benches have storage in them, which is so incredibly helpful. The tip here is don’t just buy a bench/coffee table/etc. — buy a storage bench/coffee table/etc.”
Wackerman is now on to her next home and design adventure: She recently moved across the country to New York and will no doubt create another beautiful home.
