Actress Sofia Vergara was discovered in her home country of Barranquilla, Colombia. At 17, when most teens are worried about social status and acne, Vergara booked her first gig in a Pepsi commercial. That role opened the door to modeling, and she soon graduated to TV host on the Spanish-language travel show Fuera de Serie. That successful show was nothing compared to what came her way in 2009 with the comedy Modern Family.
Vergara scored the gig of a lifetime playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, a role that had her crossing over to English-language television but still represented her Latina roots. In a 2014 interview with Time she said, “I play [Gloria] the way I see my mother and my aunt behave as Latin women. And now the writers know more about the Latin culture than when I started doing the show, and they know me better too.”
In 2017, Vergara made $41.5 million. She came in at No. 1 on Forbes Highest-Paid TV Actresses list. Impressive, right? In fact, she’s been on the list for the past six years. Her Modern Family paycheck and endorsement deals put her at the top spot. Last year, she ranked at No. 58 on Forbes World’s Highest-Paid Celebrities. We’re talking higher than Kylie Jenner and her massive lip-kit line, and Grammy winner Bruno Mars. “You have to live without the fear of making a fool out of yourself or dreaming big,” Vergara told People en Español.
Most of the world surely knows Vergara at this point, not only for her sexy fashion sense, excellent comedic timing, but also for her business empire. She has a perfume collection, is the face of CoverGirl, endorses Head & Shoulders, and recently launched a women’s underwear brand called EBY (Empowered By You). “I wasn’t thinking I was going to be a role model for women, so I embrace it,” she told Forbes.
Let’s not forget about her several movie roles and her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which she received in 2015. That year was huge for Vergara: She married her husband Joe Manganiello, and the pair will be celebrating their third wedding anniversary in November.
