See St. Joseph: A weekend of good deeds

Apr. 18—This weekend is filled with several events that are sure to lift spirits with concerts, performances, family bonding and more. Check out this week's edition of See St. Joseph.

The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art is presenting two new temporary exhibits this weekend and has invited everyone to an opening reception.

"Regional Revelations" will showcase the most prized possessions from regional art collectors. Visitors can expect to see works by Wayne Thiebaud, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and many more. The "Eighth Annual National Juried Undergraduate Exhibition" will feature 63 artworks by 40 undergraduate artists from across the nation, including students from Missouri Western State University and Northwest Missouri State University. The reception is free to the public and includes a cash bar and snacks. The opening reception goes from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 19, at the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art, 2818 Frederick Ave.

For 18 years, the Dance Arts Center has helped raise money and awareness for the prevention of child abuse through its annual "A Chance to Dance" benefit performance. As April is Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, "A Chance to Dance" raises funds for the Voices of Courage child advocacy center. Dance studios from across Northwest Missouri and throughout the region come together on stage at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Central High School to perform a variety of dances at the benefit. During the past 17 years, this benefit has raised more than $145,000 for Voices of Courage. There also will be auctions, a bake sale and a raffle. Tickets can be purchased online at the thedanceartscenter.com.

Hazel's Coffee, AR Workshop, Treasure Gardens and Merle Norman Cosmetics are all working together this weekend to give moms a little quality time with their kids at a "Mommy and Me" event. Moms get to enjoy a relaxing morning with their kids drinking lemonade, creating a flower bouquet and even getting a mini-facial. After all the fun is done, moms and their kids will get their photo taken by Emma Brunkhorst Photography. This is a great opportunity to support multiple local businesses while also spending some much-needed quality time with the kids. The fun goes from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Hazel's, 3829 Frederick Ave.

The Saint Joseph Symphony has big hopes for the future and wishes to share it with all of St. Joseph in its "The Future's So Bright" musical performance. Featuring two Missouri Western students, this musical and educational experience will include aria and concerto contest winners Sara Poet and David Welter. Poet will perform "Sorry Her Lot Who Loves Too Well" from "HMS Pinafore." Welter will play "Concerto for Trombone" by Rimsky-Korsakov. The Saint Joseph Symphony will conclude the concert with the "The Ukrainian" from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2, followed by a public social time at Felix Street Gourmet. The performance begins 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Missouri Theater, 717 Edmond St.

Tubes Bike shop has partnered with 52Eighty Creative marketing for this year's Adopt-a-Block program. The bike shop adopted its surrounding neighborhood at Frederick Avenue from 17th to 19th streets. It's all part of the "Imagine St. Joseph 2040" vision in an effort to get people out caring and cleaning up the city. Those who want to help out can meet 10 a.m. Sunday, April 21, at Tubes Bike Shop, 1826 Frederick Ave., to get supplies. Once the cleanup is finished, there will to be an afterparty for anyone who wants to stick around for free drinks and pizza.
