Edward Enninful, who has served as the editor-in-chief of British Vogue for the last several years, announced on Thursday, Feb. 8 that he's stepping down from the legendary publication.

To honor his final cover before retirement, 40 of the world's most beloved celebrities all came together to pose for an iconic photoshoot, with Salma Hayek, Miley Cyrus, Cindy Crawford, and dozens of others all decked out in their best black and white glam for the occasion.

"The end of an era," the publication called it. "After six and a half years and 153 cover stars – including the 40 legendary women who were photographed together in New York for our March 2024 issue – behold @Edward_Enninful’s 76th and final edition of @BritishVogue."

All of the subjects have the distinction of previously appearing on a cover, and all made it work to be together in New York City back in December. "Would 40 of the most booked and blessed women on earth actually make it...to take one image together?" editors wondered. "Spoiler alert: they came. From London, New York, Paris, Milan and Los Angeles, they materialised as if from a dream. Because who else could get 40 of the greatest talents from fashion, Hollywood and beyond in one room for a show of unity but Edward?"

Enninful issued a final letter from the editor alongside the March cover's reveal, reflecting on his tenure with the publication and some of the progressive changes he's most proud of.

"There have been a lot of firsts. The first 80-something to appear on Vogue’s cover happened in 2020 (Judi Dench, followed in 2023 by another amazing octogenarian Miriam Margolyes). In 2019, Laverne Cox became the first (I’m pleased to say not the last) out trans person to front an issue when she joined 14 other brilliant women on our Forces for Change edition. Sinéad Burke also appeared there, and four years later would be our consultant editor and star in another Vogue cover story when she helped us craft a portfolio featuring 19 Disabled talents entitled Reframing Fashion," he wrote.

Above all else, he says he's "filled with gratitude" for the experience.
