Katie Litchfield lives solo in this studio apartment she has rented for two years. “In the heart of Boston’s Back Bay, it’s the perfect location and oasis for a 20-something girl,” she begins. “This is my first apartment living on my own, and it will always hold a special place in my heart, as it symbolizes growing up, becoming independent, and carving my own path.”

“I grew up in a suburb outside of Boston and my family now lives in Stowe, Vermont. I currently work for a men’s clothing company that’s big in the hockey world and manage their Boston location. One day I hope to work for myself in some capacity,” Litchfield continues.

Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: To me a clean space equals a clear mind. For that reason, I gravitate towards a neutral color palette with pops of color in the form of flowers, books, and statement pieces of art. I also love minimalistic style, as I truly believe in the power of simple and thoughtful decor to elicit a calming environment in the midst of the chaos that is everyday life.

I like to be thoughtful about my decor and slowly add in/switch out as I find pieces that are special and meaningful to me in some way through my travels. For example, I have some coffee table books on display from a recent trip to Croatia, a vase from Martha’s Vineyard (where I lived the summer after college), and a vintage Christian Dior book that I found covered in dust in a secondhand shop in Stowe, VT, where my parents live.

Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Calm, bright, minimal.

What is your favorite room and why? My studio is only one room, so the whole place is my favorite room! However, if I were to pick a certain spot, it would be the bouclé accent chair. I have spent countless mornings there sipping matcha and reading a book, and evenings nestled there drinking tea and watching Gilmore Girls. I like that from that perspective I have a view of the built-in bookshelves where most of my decor is on display. That is easily my favorite feature of the apartment. You never know what you’ll get in an old Boston apartment as far as layout and charm goes, and I love that this apartment has this beautiful feature still intact.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The mini Chanel book on my bookshelf is special because I bought it at a tiny bookstore in Split, Croatia, where I vacationed with my parents earlier this year. I love pieces of art that hold meaning.

What’s your best decorating, shopping, cleaning, or organizing advice? My advice would be to think about your personal style and let that shine through in your home. Your home is your oasis, and should represent exactly how you want to feel. I think when moving to a new home it can be easy to buy things all at once in the excitement of it all, but I would also recommend decorating over time so you can find pieces that you truly love and hold meaning to you.

As we grow and evolve, our personal style does too. Swapping things within your home is a wonderful way to demonstrate this evolution and reflect changes in your life.

Thanks, Katie!
