Colman is replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth in the series about the British monarch's reign. Notably, the entire cast is changing over for the third season. "They're getting rid of all of us," Claire Foy told Vulture. "After two seasons, that's it, I'm gone."

Showrunner Peter Morgan is opting to bring in new actors to play the aging characters, as opposed to relying on age makeup and prosthetics. In addition to Colman, it has also been announced that Helena Bonham Carter will play Princess Margaret and Outlander star Tobias Menzies will play Prince Philip. "I'm so thrilled to be part of The Crown. I was utterly gripped watching it. A proper 'just one more' feeling. I think Claire Foy is an absolute genius," Colman said of her predecessor. "She's an incredibly hard act to follow. I'm basically going to rewatch every episode and copy her."

Colman is certainly keeping busy this year. In addition to seasons three and four of The Crown, which are both are reportedly filming this summer, she will appear as Madame Thénardier in the upcoming Les Misérables mini-series on PBS, and will play a queen of a different sort of Queen in The Favourite.
