When Netflix's Emily in Paris premiered, it seemingly appeared out of nowhere to whisk us away from the horrors of 2020. The frothy, escapist dramedy about an American woman (Lily Collins) who relocates to Paris was everything we needed, in a year where most of us had been unable to leave our homes, never mind the country. In December 2021, the show returned for its sophomore run, just in time to fulfill all your holiday binge needs.

Netflix has now confirmed that season 3 of Emily in Paris will premiere very soon, in December 2022. Here's what we know so far.

The season 3 release date has now been confirmed.

In a new teaser video released during Netflix's Tudum virtual fan event in October, the release date for Emily in Paris season 3 was confirmed to be December 21, 2022.

A trailer dropped at the end of November (watch above), showing Emily still working at a French marketing firm. Per Netflix, "Emily finds herself at a crucial crossroads in every aspect of her life. Faced with two very different paths, Emily will have to decide exactly where her loyalties lie — at work and in her romantic life — and what those decisions mean for her future in France, all while continuing to immerse herself in the adventures and surprising twists and turns that life in Paris provides."

Season 3 plot details have been revealed.

Season 2 ended on a momentous cliffhanger, as Emily weighed whether to stay in Paris or not. But since the title of the show hasn't suddenly changed to, say, Emily in Berlin, it's safe to assume she'll be staying put, and the teaser confirmed as much. The footage shows Emily's relationship with British boyfriend Alfie heating up, alongside her continued will-they-won't-they chemistry with Parisian beau Gabriel (Lucas Bravo). And of course, her friendship with confidante Ashley (Mindy Chen) remains a big part of the new season.

Per Variety, the new season will also feature returning cast members Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Camille Razat, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery and William Abadie.

Some new guest stars have been announced.

Alongside all of your returning favorites, there'll be a few new faces showing up in the city of lights, including Paul Forman as Nicolas de Leon. A prince and wealthy heir to his family company, Nicolas "seems to live a charmed life," per the synopsis (via E!). "But while the family name is an endless source of wealth, status, and access, it's accompanied by a crushing pressure to prove himself as more than just a nepotism hire."

Melia Kreiling will also join the show as Sofia Sideris, a Greek artist who falls into a "passionate affair" after coming to Paris for work. Inevitable.

Lucien Laviscount's Alfie will be getting an expanded role in the new season.

Fans of Emily's season 2 love interest Alfie have a lot to look forward to – the actor has been upped to a series regular for season 3, meaning he'll be getting a lot more screen time. Season 2 memorably ended with Alfie returning to the UK, but this development sure makes it seem like he'll be back across the Channel Tunnel before too long.

Season 3 will feature plenty of "crazy" twists.

Which, okay, is no surprise, but it sounds like creator Darren Starr may have gone even harder on the surprises for the show's third run—at least, according to actor Lucas Bravo.

"What made this show successful will be in the next season with more twists,' Bravo told Digital Spy. "Everything is just amplified. I feel like Darren [Star] went a bit crazy with writing this season. He's living with us and writing as we shoot so he's getting inspired by our own lives, and the things we say, and the places we go to, and he just injects the Darren Star magic bubble in the middle of all that and it just goes sideways."

Season 3 went into production during summer 2022.

At the show's PaleyFest event in April of 2022, showrunner Darren Star confirmed that season 3 would go into production in June of 2022. Filming subsequently wrapped up in September.

To mark the end of shooting, Lily Collins shared a heartfelt Instagram post which featured lots of delightful behind-the-scenes photos.

"Words can’t express how many emotions I feel when I finish each @emilyinparis season and this year is no different," Collins wrote. "We truly have the best, most dedicated crew there is and a cast I can call a family. Thank you for supporting, uplifting, and encouraging endlessly and working tirelessly to make it all happen."

Also in September, Netflix shared a few first-look images at the season:

The streamer also released an official synopsis:

One year after moving from Chicago to Paris for her dream job, Emily finds herself at a crucial crossroads in every aspect of her life. Faced with two very different paths, Emily will have to decide exactly where her loyalties lie — at work and in her romantic life — and what those decisions mean for her future in France, all while continuing to immerse herself in the adventures and surprising twists and turns that life in Paris provides.

Lily Collins is excited to return to the role.

During an interview with Glamour for season two (ahead of the season three renewal), she spoke about her hopes for the show's future. "I really hope people laugh and smile and get to have the same feelings of escapism and fun that they did the first season,” she said of the show's second chapter. "I hope viewers find more of themselves in different characters, and feel seen and represented in the show. And I hope that we get a season three, because I really hope we get to come back and do this again.”

The renewal didn't come as a total surprise.

Netflix revealed back in May that the show had been watched by some 58 million households worldwide in the first month after its release. That made it, according to the streamer, their most popular comedy series of the year. Since Netflix's viewing data is famously vague and self-reported, it's hard to know exactly what this means in the grand scheme of things. But suffice it to say, a cancellation would have been a real surprise.

Emily in Paris will return for a season 3 and a season 4.

In January 2022, Netflix announced the Emily in Paris renewal with a post on the show's Instagram account captioned, "Say ‘bonjour’ to 3 & 4! 💋 EMILY IS OFFICIALLY RETURNING FOR TWO MORE SEASONS!"
