See Every Look From the 2024 Parsons BFA Runway Show
Between the chaps, pearl-coated gowns and midriff-exposing sets sculpted to the body, the creativity was palpable at the Parsons Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Fashion Design end-of-year runway show on Monday night.
At the Hall des Lumières in lower Manhattan, graduating students presented their thesis collections — 217 looks total — to an audience made up of professors, buyers, media, designers and more fashion glitterati (all who could be future employees or collaborators). According to Marie Geneviève Cyr, director of the BFA Fashion Design program and an associate professor of fashion design, this was the program's "biggest show" to date.
"This batch of students went through a lot — for us, it was really important to bring a sense of celebration," she tells Fashionista, referring to the mix of "Covid, the faculty and student worker strikes, encampments" they witnessed during their time at the New York City school. "It's always important to find a moment of joy for [our students] because they have been working for years on this. It's super important for them to be recognized."
The runway show a wide range of ideas, from those that push traditional aesthetics to others that reflect a designer's heritage, covering the five pathways students can concentrate in within the program: collection, fashion product, materiality, systems and society, phygital fashion.
Coco Lu Xinman's "Femirotica" used software like CLO3D and Rhino to explore eroticism through a lens of queerness and vogue femme ballroom dances. "There's a lot of discussion about women empowering themselves with their bodies since 'WAP' came out — especially where I'm from in China, there are a lot of people talking about how women empowering themselves with eroticism is a different way of degrading themselves to cater towards a male gaze," the phygital fashion pathway student says. "It is our body. We do and wear what we want. This is how we celebrate the feminine body."
For Zeighn Abu Al Teen, who was in the fashion product pathway, jewelry and culture were front-and-center. "My collection is called the 'Palestinian Wedding,' and it's an exploration of love and Palestinian style that references the three main flora and fauna of Palestine," she says. Jadyce Wash, another fashion product student, focused on handbags that feature artworks by Black artists like Amy Sherald, Ed Clark and Kerry James Marshall.
