The verdict is in: Liam and Olivia are still the most popular names around for American-born babies. Liam has been in the No. 1 spot for seven years and Olivia for five, and based on Social Security Administration data there's no signs these classic names are budging.

In fact, the top five names for boys and girls remained identical between 2022 and 2023. And the only new name to squeeze into the top 10 was Mateo, which jumped from No. 11 up to No. 6. Mateo's rapid increase in popularity bumped Benjamin off of the top 10 list for boys last year.

The top five girls' names for 2023 were Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, and Sophia. The top boys' names were Liam, Noah, Oliver, James, and Elijah.

Olivia first bested Emma to rise to the top of the pack in 2019. Emma remains in the No. 2 slot and has been in the top three baby names in America since 2003. Liam has been jostling for the top two slots with Noah since 2014, eventually coming out on top in 2017.
