Live from New York...it's the Saturday Night Live origin story! Academy Award nominee Jason Reitman is taking moviegoers back to the night of SNL's first broadcast with his new Sony Pictures film, SNL 1975. The movie, directed by Reitman, is based on behind-the-scenes accounts of the opening night of the NBC sketch show, which has been a late-night staple since it debuted in 1975. SNL alumni Dan Aykroyd, Gilda RadnerChevy Chase are set to be portrayed in the upcoming movie. When will SNL 1975 be released?

A premiere date has yet to be announced. However, a 2025 release date would coincide with the 50th anniversary of SNL. Check back for updates!

What is SNL 1975 about?

The screenplay is based on a series of interviews conducted by Reitman and Gil Kenan with all of the living cast, writers and crew. The film is said to be the true story of what happened "behind the scenes in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of SNL. The chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, as we countdown the minutes in real time to the infamous words, Live From New York, it’s Saturday Night."

Who were the first SNL cast members?

The first Saturday Night Live cast, who were called the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players," consisted of Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, John Belushi and Laraine Newman. According to NBC, Radner was the first SNL performer to be cast.
