Sarah Jessica Parker made a grand return to the Met Gala.

The star embraced America's history with her gown for this year's event, wearing a strapless ball gown by Christopher John Rogers, colored in shades of white, black, and gray. The piece featured buttons down the bodice and a full skirt, with SJP finishing the look with matching opera gloves with bows on the elbows and an eye-catching headpiece. The headpiece and veil by London milliner Philip Treacy includes black-and white diamond decoration and a pink flower at the center.

The dress was inspired by the work of Elizabeth Hobbes Keckley, who had a successful career as Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker during the former first lady's time in the White House.

While this year's dress code of Gilded Glamour has seen several interpretations on the carpet so far, the Sex and the City star found inspiration from the official theme, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion." She also mentioned in a red-carpet interview that she looked to this year's exhibition when deciding on her look for tonight.

In a recent interview, the Met Gala mainstay gave some advice on how to dress for Fashion's Biggest Night, drawing on her appearances spanning since 1995 to argue the importance of guests dressing to the theme.

"All I ever think about is the theme. And influence," she said. "Wherever I go to the Met, I don’t understand how everyone else didn’t spend seven to ten months working on it. I’m like, 'How do you not arrive exhausted by the details of getting it right?'"

"All these people came together and worked really really hard to put together an extraordinary exhibit. It would be so easy to find a beautiful dress to wear that night, like, that would be a great relief, like going on vacation! But that is not the assignment. The assignment is the theme," she added.
