There’s a New Secret Garden Movie Coming Out This Spring

There’s a new adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic book The Secret Garden headed to theaters this spring, and it looks absolutely magical.

The film stars Dixie Egerickx (The Little Stranger, Patrick Melrose) as Mary Lennox, a 10-year-old girl who is orphaned in India and sent to live with her withdrawn uncle at Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire, England. Colin Firth (A Single Man, The King’s Speech) is Archibald Craven, her uncle, and Edan Hayhurst (Genius, There She Goes) plays her sickly cousin, Colin Craven. Julie Walters (Mamma Mia, Wild Rose) is the Misselthwaite housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock; Isis Davis (Silent Witness, EastEnders) plays Mary’s maid, Martha Sowerby; and Amir Wilson (His Dark Materials, The Letter for the King) is Martha’s brother, Dickon. You can see a trailer for the upcoming film below.

The film is directed by Marc Munden (The Crimson Petal and the White, Vanity Fair) and the screenplay is written by Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, Wonder). It’s produced by David Heyman, who produced all eight of The Harry Potter Series adaptations, and Rosie Alison, who produced the Paddington films.

A premiere date has yet to be announced, but we already can't wait to buy our tickets. While we wait for the film, we're going to revisit a few other Secret Garden adaptations. In preparation to see the film, reacquaint yourself with the story by re-reading the book, which you can find from a local bookseller via indiebound.org, and re-watching previous film adaptations, including the 1993 version starring Dame Maggie Smith. (There’s even a Secret Garden musical!)
