Grammy-winning artist Doja Cat loves to push the sartorial and beauty envelope. From covering her face and body with metallic gold makeup during the Spring-Summer Paris Fashion Week shows to most recently donning 30,000 red crystals and an avant-garde creation at Schiaparelli's recent haute couture show, it's safe to say she's a fashion and beauty risktaker in every sense of the word. So it should be no surprise that Doja Cat wore a daring black latex Versace gown to the Grammys red carpet last night.
We spoke to Doja Cat's very own makeup artist, Ernesto Casillas, about what inspired the look and how you can recreate all the glam at home. Casillas says, “I knew right off the bat that I wanted to stay away from a more glam, Instagram type of makeup, which is something we have dabbled in before, but for this, we wanted to keep it more fashion by keeping the skin fresh and glowing while playing up her eyes.”

Doja Cat’s Grammys Eye Makeup Tutorial
Although Doja Cat's eye is super dramatic and looks complicated, you only need a few beauty products, including the just-under-$8 eyelashes to recreate this look at home.
Eyeshadow: To create this super sexy eye, Casillas started by layering light to deep brown eyeshadow and applied the deeper brown eyeshadow closer to the lashes.
Eyeliner: Next, he used a liquid liner to elongate the eye and opened up the inside corner of the eye by leaving negative space. “If you’re scared of sharp winged eyeliner, use a pencil and smudge it for a smokier effect,” he recommends.
Eyelashes: “I opted for a flared lash with spiky clusters to help elongate the eye and add a dramatic wispy effect. For this, I opted for the Kiss Lash in the style ‘Sire’ from the new Muse Lash Collection,” he says. If applying false eyelashes leaves you uneasy, don't worry: Casillas has some straightforward advice: He applied the Kiss Strip Lash Adhesive and waited 10-15 seconds for it to get tacky, then applied the lashes and topped off with a generous coat of mascara to both top and bottom lashes. “The great thing about this look is that it doesn’t have to be precise.”
Q&A with Casillas on Working With Doja Cat
Like you, our team adores Doja Cat, so I had to chat more with Casillas post-Grammys about working with the pop superstar.
Q: When and how did you and Doja Cat first connect?
A: Doja and I first met when we worked together for the 2021 American Music Awards. We had great chemistry right off the bat, and she loved the way I did her skin. Ever since then, it's been nothing but a great partnership between us.
Q: Tell us about the chemistry between you and Doja Cat.
A: We understand each other's sense of humor, and we know when it's time to play and when it's time to get things done. We both love makeup and are always looking into new techniques and looks to play with. Sometimes she lets me do my thing, or sometimes she comes to the table with ideas. The majority of the time, we collaborate together, and that makes for synergy.
Q: How did you feel after you saw Doja Cat hit the Grammys red carpet?
A: The glam process is always so much fun for us. When it comes down to the wire, though, the pressure mounts so that by the time she finally hits the red carpet, there's both a sense of pride and relief. It's also such a great feeling of accomplishment because the Grammys are a big night for music, fashion, and beauty and [is] always an event I always look forward to.
