Season Three of 'Bridgerton' is One For The Wallflowers

There are still three long months to go for Bridgerton fans until the first half of series three drops on Netflix on May 16. And the anticipation just got a little bit more intense as cast members and creators offered a sneak peek into what we can expect next from the Ton.
When producer Shonda Rhimes was joined by season three stars including Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington), Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton), and Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte) at Claridge’s Hotel in London today, there was one sentiment that kept being repeated, “This is for the wallflowers.”
As Penelope Featherington emerges from the shadows to steal both center-stage and the heart of her longtime friend Colin Bridgerton, we are being warned to expect plenty of twists and turns. “So much happens in this season, it’s wild,” Nicola Coughlan teased. And when asked to find one word to sum up the series, Luke Newton did not hesitate to say he would describe it as “unpredictable.”
But it was Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury) who most managed to get to the crux of what series three is all about when she turned to Nicola Coughlan after seeing the show at a cast screening and told her, "This is for the wallflowers.”
“I just think this show makes a space for everybody,” Andoh said today. “I find it incredibly moving, especially that we launched during the pandemic when everybody was isolated, lonely, frightened about their future, feeling out of control. And this show just extended its arms to everyone and said, come on in, you’re welcome, come sit with us for a while.” Later, she reiterated, “Season three is for all us wallflowers.”
“I hope this season will make people who feel not seen, seen and make everyone realize how deserving and worthy they are of love,” Coughlan said.
Netflix released episode titles today, which take us from episode one Out of the Shadows to episode eight Into the Light. They also teased new images from the show including one of Penelope with a new suitor whom she courts while trying to find a husband. But in the end, the Ton’s Lady Whistledown only has eyes for her Bridgerton.
“I think what I’m most excited about, for the fans and for everybody, is that usually we’re meeting a new person who’s falling in love with one of our regulars,” said Shonda Rhimes. “This time we know the people who are falling in love, we’re already rooting for them.”
