Did you know that we spend around one-fourth to one-third of our lives either sleeping or preparing to sleep? Not to mention that the quality of our sleep can affect everything from memory retention to weight fluctuations to depression, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Low-quality sleep can impact every moment of our days, so why would we settle for anything less than a full night's rest?

Unfortunately, if you wake up often suffering from night sweats or chills or from a noisy comforter, then you're not getting high-quality sleep. Which is why it's so important to find a comforter that's not just well-made, but also tailored to your sleep needs. For instance, if you have sensitive skin, then a hypoallergenic comforter should be top of your list. If you sleep hot, then breathability is a major concern.

Of course, wading through all the comforters Amazon has to offer trying to find the perfect one may cause you to lose sleep at night. So, we've done the research for you. We've combed through hundreds of reviews and conducted our own testing to compile this list of the best comforters on Amazon, specifically tailored to you. Cloud Comforter

The Buffy Cloud comforter is a bit of an investment, but it's a duvet insert you'll be thrilled with every day for years to come. Unlike other duvet inserts, the shell of the Buffy Cloud Comforter is made from a super breathable TENCEL™ Lyocell fabric that's more akin to satin or silk than it is cotton. It has a recycled PET fill that's hypoallergenic yet luxuriously plush, and the weave pattern of the shell eliminates any bunching your comforter might experience during washing.

On the note of washing, the Cloud Comforter is both machine washable and dry-able, making it incredibly easy to care for. It's also designed for all-season use, so there's no need to worry about swapping it out for a lighter or heftier option throughout the year. And you can rest easy knowing that each comforter upcycles 50 plastic bottles and is made using sustainable wood sources, like eucalyptus.

Our only complaint with the Buffy comforter is the limited sizing options. For the investment, we'd appreciate more specific sizing than what's offered, but it's not totally off-par from other brands.

Rave review: "I was skeptical about this comforter because of the fabric but it is soft and well made. Have washed it several times and it did not clump up and it is very soft. I think it is just as good as my 400 dollar comforter from the Company Store. It is soft very soft and warm but not to warm. I am impressed with the quality."

Goose Down Feather Comforter

Feather down comforters are going to be pricey regardless, but it's still possible to find a reasonably priced option that will satisfy even the snobbiest sleepers. With a goose down fill and Egyptian cotton shell, this comforter is the epitome of budget-friendly luxury.

The baffle box stitching reduces bunching that can be common in down comforters and double stitching reinforces the strength and quality of the design. And while some shoppers might be concerned that a more inexpensive down comforter could entail smells or itchiness, you can rest assured that's not the case with this one. It's certified by the Responsible Down Standard and DOWNPASS which ensures a low risk of allergic reactions or odd smells.

We also love that this comforter comes in a variety of sizing options, so it's easy to find one that will perfectly fit your bed. And with 8 loops, it'll securely stay fastened to your duvet cover.

While this comforter is listed as an all-season option, many reviewers do mention that it runs warm, so you may want to sleep without it in the summer months or be prepared to bump the A/C a little lower. It's also important to note that this duvet comes without any wash instructions, so, to be safe, we'd recommend only spot cleaning it.

Rave review: "The headline pretty much sums up how thrilled I was when this comforter was unwrapped. The quality is top notch. I use a duvet cover which adds two layers of cotton to the fluffy white down comforter. The result is a lightweight but extremely cozy cover. We're using the 'palatial size' to cover twin adjustable beds and the 120 x 98 size is perfect! Highly recommend giving this comforter a try when in the market for luxury down... amazing value."

Australian Washable Wool Comforter

Wool has a reputation for being hot and stuffy, but this couldn't be further from the truth. While wool is wonderful at warming, it's also incredibly breathable, allowing body heat to permeate easily. All that's needed for adequate comfort is a thin layer, so those who love a lightweight comforter are sure to enjoy the Woolino duvet.

Woolino was started by a mother searching for a sleep sack that would keep her baby in bed longer. If it's good enough to keep a baby in bed all night, just imagine what it could do for your sleep.

Filled with 100% Merino wool, the Woolino comforter can be used year-round thanks to its breathability. It comes in a cotton sateen shell that adds to the luxurious and lightweight feel. The best part? Unlike so many wool comforters, the Woolino duvet is machine-washable. A duvet cover is recommended for durability, though.

Rave review: "We truly love this brand and buy their products consistently, for us and as gifts for our friends and family. We are never disappointed! We purchased the small size of this comforter for our toddler and it is honestly the best we could have picked: it is warm and cozy, suitable for the winter (we live in Boston). It’s very soft and my daughter absolutely loves it. We did purchase a duvet cover for it, just because I feel it is better to have something to keep it clean; I also wanted to be able to change the cotton duvet periodically without having to wash the comforter every 2 weeks. Definitely recommend it!"

Goose Down Alternative Comforter

While it's always worth it to invest in high-quality products when it comes to your sleep, there are a handful of great comforters out there that are totally budget-friendly, and this Bare Home option takes the cake—just ask one of the 7,700 reviewers who gave it five-stars.

The feather down alternative fill keeps the cost on this comforter low, but the cozy level is off the charts. In conjunction with the microfiber shell, the down alternative fill insulates heat but still feels slightly cool to the touch, making it the perfect option for just about any season.

In addition to not costing much up front, the Bare Home comforter will save you money in the long run thanks to its durability. The long-lasting hydro-brushed microfiber is resistant to tears and easily cleaned in the washing machine. We also love the reversible colors, so you can switch styles at the drop of a hat.

Rave review: "I love this reversible comforter. The weight is perfect for all season use, not too heavy or too light, it's just right. The fabric is nicely smooth and soft to the touch and has a high quality feel to it. Definitely worth the price."

100% Mulberry Silk Filled Duvet Insert

The materials of this high-quality duvet are right in the name! Made from 100% long-strand Mulberry silk fill with a 100% premium cotton shell, this comforter is the definition of luxury.

If you've ever worn pure silk, you know just how soft and breathable it is. Combined with the lightweight nature of cotton, this comforter is perfect for just about every season. But, if you prefer something a little more cooling, there are also Spring/Summer/Fall and Summer versions. While the all-season version is rated for temperatures ranging from 62-73 F, the Spring/Summer/Fall options is rated for 68-78 F and the Summer for 73-80 F.

As with almost all pure silk products, the care for this duvet is a bit tedious. The company recommends only dry washing or placing the duvet in the sunlight to clean. So, this might not be the most ideal option for pet-friendly households.

Rave review: "I’ve tried many blankets and in various climates. When it’s tropical hot, of course a duvet of any kind is an overkill. But in San Francisco Bay Area like weather, having a cozy duvet makes all the difference for a good nights sleep. Some of the thicker blankets over time become lumpy and uneven. They are not always weighted and feel fluffy. Tossing and turning from hot to cold was the norm.

With these silk duvets from the cotton and silk, I get a much better sleep and my sleep quality has increased drastically. The duvet is even, gently weighted and allows for turning motion without waking myself up, and keeps my body at the right temperature for an all night sleep. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to improve their quality of sleep and feel energized when you wake up in the morning."

Lightweight Cumulus Comforter

Going beyond using different fabrics, Slumber Cloud's comforter utilizes Outlast® technology that doesn't just respond to temperature changes—it essentially predicts them (sort of). Whereas many other moisture-wicking fabrics act in response to body temperature changes 0nly by the time you've started sweating, Outlast® actively stores your own body heat and re-releasing that heat when you become too cold.

And in case you're worried that this comforter might feel synthetic thanks to all the neat technology, that's definitely not the case. The Outlast® fill mimics the texture and weight of down fibers to provide the same comfort level you might expect with those duvets. Even better: it's machine washable.

We do want to point out, that while this comforter is Slumber Cloud's most lightweight, it's not the most cooling. You'll want to check out their UltraCool Comforter for the highest cooling rating.

Think all that tech is just talk? Take a look at the bevy of five-star reviews to see for yourself.

Rave review: "I've always read that only natural fibers breath(e) and because of that, I've always stuck to cotton cover with cotton fill or cotton cover with down fill. Well, our last blanket (which we will keep because of how unspeakably expensive it was...) was cotton and down, and we would wake up several times per night, just glazed in a coat of sweat. I Googled 'best blanket for hot sleepers' and this was unanimously the winner on multiple review sites. I'm so thankful that I trusted these reviews and went against my 'synthetics can't breath(e)' theory that was drilled into my head. Not only have we not woken up once because it was too hot, but it keeps us perfectly warm when it's cold in the room. Just today, I took a nap and it was cold in there so I put the blanket over my head, fully expecting to have to take my head out to breath in a few moments... but that 'I'm just breathing in my own hot breath and about to suffocate' feeling, never came. The air exchange is so good, I slept completely under the blanket for at least a half hour and had one of the best naps of my adult life. Another perk is that the warmth to stuffing ratio is really small. When the box arrived, I had to double check that I had ordered the right size. Some people may not like this but I think it's great; it will take up less space when stored and I can wash it in my home washer."

Evercool® Cooling Comforter

For the sleeper who loves the comfort of a duvet year-round but needs something as light as a quilt for the warmer months, meet your perfect match. This cooling comforter is more of a cross between a comforter and a quilt, if you ask us. It's ultra-lightweight with minimal fill but still has an adequate amount of fluff to make it cozy.

But it's not just the minimal fill that makes this comforter perfect for summer. The shell of the Evercool® comforter is made from fibers that are five times finer than silk, so it's totally cool to the touch. That's why this duvet is designed to be used totally on its own—no cover and no top sheet. These ultra-thin fibers also create a weave structure that can quickly absorb any moisture it comes in contact with, though we highly doubt you'll sweat with this comforter.

The best part? This comforter doesn't require any special care—just toss it in the washing machine. And while it's a pricier duvet insert, considering you can drop the top sheet and duvet cover, you may save money in the long run.

Editor review: "I'm a hot sleeper, so the idea of a cooling comforter is very intriguing to me. This Evercool comforter from Rest is surprisingly cool—like the other side of the pillow. It actually feels cool and silky to the touch. The moisture-wicking fabric kept me comfortable at night. That said, it might not be warm enough for sleepers in cold climates. I don't use a top sheet, so the feel of a comforter is key. This one is very smooth and gentle on the skin. It's also machine-washable and resists pet hair—a must in my house."

All-Season White Down Alternative Quilted Comforter

Down alternative fill is perfect for those who love the weight and comfort of feather down but don't want to pay the price or deal with the potentially difficult care instructions. It's also a great option for anyone worried about itching or sneezing due to the fill of their comforter as this synthetic material is hypoallergenic. When it comes to down alternative comforters, it's hard to beat this option from Linenspa.

The box-stitch design keeps all that cozy fill in place and the eight loop tabs keep your comforter in place within your duvet cover. But in case you don't want to use a cover, you can choose from six reversible colors to bring style to your space without spending any extra money.

While many reviewers found this comforter to be lightweight and cooling, synthetic fibers do have a tendency to trap heat, so this might not be the best option for super hot sleepers.

Rave review: "Ya’ll, I never write reviews. But this blanket is so amazing and worth it I needed to let others know of its wonders. I got the queen size for a good deal, been needing to replace my old duvet for the longest time. My boyfriend and I share a queen, and we each have our own blanket so we aren’t stealing from each other. However, this blanket is perfectly sized, plush, cozy yet breathable, we have been sharing it with no problem. I am in love, this duvet is great, especially for the price!!"

Comforter Duvet Insert

If it's the best-selling comforter on Amazon, it has to be amazing, right? We and over 90,000 reviewers who gave this comforter five-star reviews all agree: it really is that great of a product.

Reviewers love how well this down alternative fill mimics that of traditional feather down, but for a fraction of the cost. The fluff factor on this comforter is off the charts in comparison to other down alternative options. Another huge plus: thanks to the down alternative fill, this comforter is completely machine washable.

Since the down alternative is a synthetic material, this comforter does run a bit on the warmer side, however the shell feels cool to the touch, which makes it perfectly suitable for all seasons for most people.

Rave review: "This is a great insert! It beats a way more expensive feather one that I bought! This is great weight and comfort, it also has the four ties on the sides which I love, perfect softness and warmth and best part no feathers flying around! So glad I got this and I wish I didn’t spend money on an expensive insert before"

Seersucker Queen Comforter Set

While this comforter isn't listed specifically as pet-friendly, it'll only take a quick glance at the reviews to see that pet owners love it. Machine-washable and with a textured fabric, it hides fur and hair well and easily cleans. The brushed microfiber fabric also brushes clean of any hair or dander with just a few swipes of the hand.

Even if your fur babies don't sleep with you, though, we're still sure you'll love this comforter. Reviewers mention how surprisingly warm it is, especially considering how lightweight the overall feel is. And anyone will appreciate how easy it is to clean this comforter. Just stick it in the washing machine with cold water and you're good to go!

Rave review: "With two dogs in the house (70lb husky & 30lb short haired mix) I have had two other Amazon comforters destroyed by playful behavior and claws. Plus they always seemed to coated in dog hair (could have just been because those were black so the hair was more noticeable). This one on the other hand, as stood up pretty well to the test of two dogs. There is one tiny hole, but otherwise it has held up!It soft, it keeps me warm, easy to wash, what's not to love!If you're a dog person/family and are on the fence, give it a go!"

All Season Down Alternative Duvet Insert

This inexpensive comforter is truly the Goldilocks of duvets—not too heavy, not too light, just right. The down alternative insert might not be as luxurious as some feather-filled options, but it's hypoallergenic and much easier to care for, yet still provides all the comfort you'd expect.

The Bedsure down alternative duvet insert also comes in more size options than most others on the market, including specialized sizes for Full and California King beds. If you've ever tried snuggling in a King sized comforter on a California King bed, then you'll know that the two have definite size differences.

And if you're not into the duvet insert hassle, then fear not: since this comforter comes in tons of different color options, it can totally stand alone on a bed. No need to worry about treating your duvet as a precious commodity and keep a cover on at all times—this comforter goes straight into the washing machine.

In fact, some of our own editors have this duvet in their homes and rave about the quality. "I first used this Bedsure duvet insert on our bed, but moved it to the guest room when we sized up to a King sized bed, and then promptly purchased the exact same insert in a King size. Not only do we love it, but our guests rave about it, as well. I've never had issues with clumping in either size thanks to the design, and it feels super substantial."

All Season Down Comforter

As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. So if you can swing a big of a splurge on a new comforter or duvet, then we highly recommend this Brooklinen option. If you've felt their sheets before then you know exactly what we mean when we say this comforter is next-level soft. And if you haven't had the pleasure of trying out their sheets, then get ready to experience what sleeping on a cloud feels like.

The Brooklinen All Season Down Comforter has the perfect fluffy yet substantial construction you want in a duvet insert. When you lay on it, you don't feel as though you immediately sink in because all the fill has distributed away, but it's not too heavy when you need to pull up the covers at night. It strikes a balance that so many other comforters dream to achieve.

The downside? This comforter is the most expensive on our list, coming in at $380. But, it is an all-season comforter that's high-quality, so you won't have to worry about switching it out and should get years of use out of it. If you prefer something lighter or more substantial, though, this comforter also comes in both lightweight and ultra-warm versions.

Rave review: "I’m in love with this Brookline(n) comforter! It is very light in actual weight but it definitely keeps you warm. I am always cold. Always. And I am still very happy with this comforter. I probably could have gone heavier if I were to choose again but I don’t regret the purchase at all. It is clear that it is made of quality down!"

What to Look for When Shopping for a Comforter

Have you ever wondered what makes those five-star hotel beds look so darn fluffy? We'll let you in on a little secret: it's the fill of the comforter. And—plot twist—a high fluff factor doesn't equate to high quality. In fact, many people would benefit from sleeping under a comforter that has a more lightweight fill. But, it helps to know the different types before deciding what works best for you:

  • Feather down—this is most likely what you think of when you imagine those super fluffy comforters from days of old. Made from real bird feather and down, this fill naturally regulates temperature the same way it would for the birds it came from. Luxurious and cozy, feather down fill is breathable yet warm, but it does have its downsides. Most notably: sometimes it can cause problems with allergy sufferers. Ethically-sourced high-quality down fill should be fine for most people, though. Down feather fill can also be noisy and heavy, both factors that can wake some people up.

  • Down alternative—usually made from polyester, down alternative fill is a hypoallergenic option that's made to mimic the weight and feel of feather down. Most down alternative is more lightweight than feather down, which some people may prefer. However, synthetic materials like polyester tend to be on the less breathable side in comparison to natural, so hot sleepers might enjoy a heftier feather down comforter rather than a lightweight down alternative option.

  • Wool—just like your favorite winter coat, some comforters come with wool as a natural fill option instead of feather down. Wool is typically seen as a more ethically produced fill in comparison to down as sheep naturally need their coats sheared, but there are many ethically-sourced down options available. Similar to feather down, wool is naturally breathable but retains warmth, just as it would work on the sheep. Wool tends to be more lightweight than feather down, though, since the fibers are able to be packed tighter. While some people may love the fluff of a feather down comforter, many will appreciate how lightweight and noiseless a wool one is.

  • Lyocell—a semi-synthetic fabric, lyocell is made from wood pulp and has a similar texture to cheaper materials like polyester, but is usually a bit more breathable and potentially better for the environment. Like down alternative fill, it's hypoallergenic and lower cost than feather down, but not as low cost as down alternative. It's a great mid-priced option for people who find down alternative to be a bit too stuffy.

  • Silk—while not a super common comforter fill, silk is a luxurious one to be sure. Ultra-breathable and lightweight, it's a great option for hot sleepers or for a spring-fall duvet insert. However, the upkeep (or lack thereof) might turn some people off. As with most silk products, cleaning should be dry only.

While the fill of the comforter is going to control your body temperature overnight, the shell is what will touch your skin directly when you climb in bed. So, if you're a hot sleeper, you'll probably appreciate a cool-to-the-touch shell. Either way, a breathable shell is a must no matter what the fill of the comforter is. Most comforter shells are some form of cotton or a synthetic material like polyester. The cotton could range from Egyptian cotton to a sateen weave, so it's important to check as this can drastically change the overall feel of your comforter. Synthetics are usually a polyester blend, which can make them less breathable than cotton. Microfiber would fall under this category.
