*Major spoilers for You below!*

Part 2 of You season 4 has officially dropped on Netflix, but the events of the series’ first five episodes are still living in our heads rent-free.

After Joe fakes his death and escapes the United States in an attempt to reunite with his last victim, Marienne, he ends up in Paris. When Marienne discovers what Joe’s done, she runs off and exclaims that she never wants to see him again. Joe, heartbroken, flees Paris and settles in London, where he adopts a new identity as a university professor and falls in with a crowd of rich aristocrats.

At the beginning of season 4, Joe — excuse us, Jonathan Moore — attempts to lay low and stay out of trouble. Soon enough, he finds himself enwrapped in an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery... but in a twist of events, he doesn’t appear to be the killer. There are a few plot twists that begin to unravel toward the end of Part 1, so ahead, we’ve broken down everything that went down in the finale. Before you binge-watch the final five episodes, here’s the You season 4, Part 1 ending, explained.

Why is Joe in London?

After faking his own death and framing Love for his crimes in Madre Linda, Joe escapes to Europe in an attempt to find Marienne. He goes to Paris, then eventually finds her at a market in London. Of course, she’s terrified by his presence after Love gave her a warning about his chilling habits. Joe goes up to her but she runs. She confronts him and Joe lets her leave so she can return to Paris and be with her daughter, Juliette. Joe, devastated, decides to take an extended holiday in London, where he embraces his new identity as literature professor Jonathan Moore.

Does Joe fall for anyone else?

Joe befriends Malcolm, another professor at the university where he works, and grows fond of his girlfriend, Kate. Throughout Part 1 of season 4, Joe builds a relationship with Kate, which causes multiple complications. First, he ends up at a party at the exclusive Sundry House with Malcolm, Kate, and their wealthy, socialite friends — Phoebe Borehall-Braxworth, her boyfriend Adam Pratt, Nigerian princess Blessing Bosede, artist Simon Soo and his influencer sister, Sophie Soo, Roald Walker-Burton, Gemma Graham-Greene, Connie, and writer Rhys Montrose.

During the party, Joe gets incredibly drunk (it’s likely a drink of his may have been tampered with) and doesn’t remember much from the night. The next morning, he finds Malcolm’s dead body on a table in his apartment and cleans up the remains. He honestly cannot remember whether he killed Malcolm or not, and it appears he may have been framed for the murder.

Who dies in You season 4, Part 1?

After Malcolm dies, Joe starts receiving mysterious text messages from someone following him. As he attempts to unravel the mystery of who the anonymous messenger is within the group of rich aristocrats, they start getting killed off one by one.

In a real-life murder mystery, the group is a target for the “Eat the Rich Killer.” In episode 2, Simon is killed during his opening at Kate’s art gallery. Meanwhile, Joe returns to his apartment and finds stapled clippings of articles about everyone he has murdered throughout the first three seasons of You. Given his behavior, Joe is an obvious suspect, but he actually is not the one responsible for the murders.

It’s not long until Joe settles back into his old habits, though. He ends up fighting with Adam’s bodyguard, Vic, and kills him. While he buries the body, the police seem to be onto him, but in true You fashion, he gets away with it. As he tries to figure out who’s framing him for the slew of murders in the group, Phoebe invites the remaining members to her family’s country home (aka massive estate) in Hampsbridge, to take their minds off of everything that’s been happening. Naturally, Joe does some digging at Hampsie, to see if he can solve the mystery. But Roald catches him in the act and pushes Joe out of a second-story window. As Joe returns to the house from the fall, he finds Kate, who’s looking at a dead Gemma on the floor.

At the end of Part 1, Roald accuses Joe of being the killer. As he holds a gun to Joe’s head, Roald attempts to convince the group that he was the one behind Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma’s deaths. Joe is able to make an escape and runs to the woods, but Roald catches up to him. Joe manages to fight him off — until Rhys suddenly shows up, kidnaps them, and chains them under Phoebe’s family home.

Rhys, who’s revealed to be the real Eat the Rich Killer, wants Joe to murder Roald so he can frame him for his killing spree. But Joe refuses to feed into Rhys’s games, which motivates the Eat the Rich Killer to kick an open-flame lantern that sets the dungeon, and eventual house, on fire. After many stressful minutes, Joe and Roald escape with Kate’s help, and return to London with the others.

In the last scene of the episode 5, Rhys announces he’s running for mayor of London. But Joe is determined to take him down once and for all. “Whatever your big plans are, I need to stop you before you can hurt another soul and drag mine down with you,” he declares.
