'You' Season 4 promises a killer twist—in more ways than one.

Hey, all you fans of the sophisticated stalker series: You Season 4 is coming "4 you!"

The Netflix smash, based on novels by Caroline Kepnes and starring Gossip Girl alum Penn Badgley, was renewed for a fourth season in October 2021—two days before the arrival of the show's highly anticipated Season 3.

"It’s been thrilling to watch Penn bring [protagonist Joe Goldberg] to creepy yet compelling life. We're deeply grateful that Netflix has shown You such monumental support, and that people around the world have enjoyed watching Joe really get it all very wrong over the past three seasons," showrunner Sera Gamble said in a statement. "The whole You team is excited to explore new, dark facets of love in Season 4."

(Beware: You Season 1, 2, and 3 spoilers ahead!)

You follows the twisted and murderous doings of Badgley's Joe, a bibliophile, stalker and serial killer with a soft spot for kids. In Season 1, the first object of his affection, Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) met a tragic end, as did anyone who got in his way during their relationship. Season 2 saw Joe move from New York City to Los Angeles, where he truly met his match in Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), with whom he has much more in common than he expected. At the end of Season 2, Joe and Love tied the knot and were expecting their first baby when he caught a glimpse of yet another stunning blonde next door and began to obsess over her, too. Yikes!

In Season 3, Joe and Love move to the fictional Madre Linda, California, a wealthy, mommy blogger-filled Silicon Valley suburb full of fancy surveillance technology and a lot of gossip — and, thus, fewer places to hide any secrets... and bodies.

And from the looks of some Season 4 photos that have come out, we now know that Joe relocates once more for Season 4, seemingly all the way to Europe and the UK!

Yep, You Season 4 is happening! We know it follows the events of Season 3, in which we saw Joe and Love become parents to newborn son Henry, while Joe found a new obsession in Natalie Engler (Michaela McManus) the woman who lived next door to their new home in Northern California, then with his boss at the local library. Of course, Joe's obsessions ended in bloodshed and a big body count—plus two super obnoxious influencers locked in their glass cage (but who escaped mostly unscathed). Love didn't survive the season, as she and Joe's mutual distrust and cheating (he with his boss, Marienne, played by Tati Gabrielle, and hers with Engler's stepson, Theo, played by Dylan Arnold) ended with them trying to outsmart one another—and Joe came out on top, murdering Love, setting fire to their home, and leaving their son with his friend and library co-worker Dante (Ben Mehl).

In June 2022, Badgley revealed that You Season 4 would be a bit different than the previous three.

"The tone is similar but it's shifting in that there is a different format. We're using a different format," he told Entertainment Tonight. "It's almost like we're shifting the genre slightly. And I think it works."

Badgley insisted back in late 2021 that he knew nothing about whether You would once again relocation for Season 4, but he did tell Entertainment Tonight that Joe is a "device" who's fun to see in new situations—and now we know where many of those Season 4 situations will take place. The official You Twitter account has teased that Joe will travel to Paris, then London, although we don't know why yet.

We do know why they're filming in London in real life, however: Badgley told Entertainment Tonight, "To be real, it's cheaper."

Since many of the characters in this series return as visions in Joe's head even after they're long dead, it's safe to assume that we'll see a lot of familiar faces in Season 4, possibly including Love and Henry. We may also see Arnold return as Theo and Scott Speedman as Matthew Engler, Saffron Burrows as Dottie Quinn, and Mehl as Dante, with whom Joe left Henry before fleeing Madre Linda.

Who are the You Season 4 characters?

The You Season 4 characters include:

Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley)

Marienne (Tati Gabrielle)

Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper)

Kate (Charlotte Ritchie)

Adam (Lukas Gage)

Nadia Farran (Amy-Leigh Hickman)

Sophie Soo (Niccy Lin)

Simon Soo (Aidan Cheng)

Blessing (Ozioma Whenu)

Roald (Ben Wiggins)

Connie (Dario Coates)

Malcolm (Stephen Hagan)

Gemma (Eve Austin)

Rhys (Ed Speleers)

Based on past seasons, we can also assume that we may see past characters, if only in flashbacks or hallucinations, in Season 4 as well. Surviving characters like Theo, Dante, Dottie, and Henry—as well as the insufferable Sherry and Cary Conrad—may pop up, as well as the bodies Joe's left in his wake up to now.

"You know, if you're gonna go, you want it to be unique," Pedretti joked of her character's death to Entertainment Tonight. "It was definitely really sad and troubling and tragic the way it all goes down, but I also knew I was going to die, so it wasn't surprising. But it was surprising to see exactly how." As far as returning, she said the decision isn't up to her, so only time will tell if she'll haunt Joe in Paris.

When is the You Season 4 release date?

You will be released in two parts for Season 4, reportedly to give fans time to process what they saw in the first half (yikes!). You Season 4 Part 1 will drop on Netflix on Feb. 9, 2023, with Part 2 debuting a month later on March 9, 2023.

In March 2022, it was revealed that Season 4 production was underway.

Is there a You Season 4 trailer?

very brief teaser dropped on Oct. 13, 2021. Released before You Season 3 dropped on Netflix, the clip plays on Joe's "for you" rambles to previous loves Beck and Love (as well as nemeses like Peach) with "4 you" and "You 4."

Badgley told Entertainment Tonight, Joe may temporarily feel more liberated across the pond, but notes, "The problem is in him, it's not so much outside of him so he's trying to change. He is always trying—failing trying."

Another teaser dropped on Sept. 27, 2022, showing Joe in his new identity as a professor in London and the characters he'll find himself surrounded with—including the return of Marienne from Season 3.

A full trailer for You Season 4 Part 1 dropped on Jan. 9, 2023.

In the trailer, we see Joe being stalked by someone texting him about his whereabouts, all while an "Eat the Rich" killer is on the loose in London. We catch a glimpse of Marienne, as well as of Lady Phoebe asking a woozy Joe if someone broke his heart (or if he killed someone).

"I fell in with the most insane, damaged people on Earth. A circle of privileged douchebags," he said. "But I miss having someone out there."

Joe apparently thinks one of Kate's friends may be the killer and fights his urges to, well, stalk and murder people himself.

How can I watch You?

You streams on Netflix.

Will You Season 4 be based on a book?

There are three books in Kepnes' series so far; it's unclear as of yet whether or not You Season 4 will follow the plotlines she's developed or expand into brand new territory. You Season 1 was based (if slightly loosely) on the first novel in the series, You, while Season 2 followed the storylines of Hidden Bodies, though its ending was quite different: Instead of moving to the suburbs together in the novel, Joe is in jail because of the insane amount of evidence that he's a full-blown serial killer. Love's rich parents get him out of jail thanks to their cash and connections, but pay him to leave Love alone, and he moves to a small town in Washington alone.

Season 3 loosely followed the plot of the third book in the series, You Love Me, though there are some major differences: Henry is a much greater presence in the show than he is in the book (and in the book, his birth name is Forty instead of his middle name); Love is also much more present in the series than in the book. Joe loves his suburban life in the book but feels trapped in the show. There's no Natalie Engler in the book, and while he does indeed obsess over a librarian in the novel, her name is Mary Kay DiMarco, and she's married to a man named Phil.

Badgley told Entertainment Tonight in June 2022 that the series deviates from the books on purpose, explaining, "Nothing was the same [in the show as in the books], and the writer of the book and the creators of the show, they've always known starting from the same place, from the same point—Joe of the books—if you recreated him faithfully, it would be tough to watch. It would be really tough to watch."
