Netflix Just Released the New 'Virgin River' Trailer, and We're Already on the Edge of Our Seats
  • The first season of your new favorite Netflix drama premiered in December 2019, followed by the second season on November 27, 2020.

  • Netflix confirmed that season 3 will be released on July 9, 2021.

  • The show is based on the Virgin River book series by Robyn Carr. The 21st book in the series was released on October 13.

Netflix's Virgin River became an instant sensation last year, with its dramatic tales of Mel, a city-loving nurse practitioner and midwife who moves to a remote California town to escape the tragic events of her tough past. Along the way, Mel meets the people of Virgin River, a fictional town that has its fair share of very real problems. (Most notably, she finds herself in a complicated romantic situation with Jack, the local bar owner and part-time fly fisherman/handyman.)

The show's second season premiered at the end of November, and certainly left viewers with a handful of cliffhangers to grapple with until a possible season three arrives. If you've spent the last several weeks (or months!) lost in the woodsy world of Virgin River with Mel & Jack, we have great news for you: more episodes are officially coming!

Warning: Season 2 spoilers ahead!

What happened at the end of season 2?

Season two premiered on November 27, 2020, and it's safe to say the ending left viewers on the edge of their seat. Jack's ex-girlfriend Charmaine struggles through the early stages of her pregnancy, and discovers that she and Jack are having twins. Charmaine considers moving to Portland to raise the twins with family, but meanwhile, Jack has bought a house in Virgin River for his future family. Mel and Jack finally get together and acknowledge their feelings for each other after weathering plenty of skepticism from the town's rumor mill, only to have their relationship derailed again by miscommunications and (*insert dramatic music*) some very dangerous events.

After tensions had risen all season between Calvin and his suspicious "lumber" (aka: "drug") operations outside of town, Jack is shot by a mysterious man late at night in his bar, where he is soon discovered by a very distraught Mel.

Viewers were left to wonder whether Jack would survive his encounter with violence. Meanwhile, Doc tries to share some medical news with Hope, but the conversation is derailed by a surprise "re-engagement" party thrown by their friends from town. Preacher is fully wrapped up in Paige's dark past, as he volunteers to help her cover up the accidental death of her abusive husband, while Brady navigates the complicated ins and outs of doing business with Calvin and his guys.

We can't WAIT to find out what happens to Jack (and Doc, and Preacher, and Brady... And our favorite teenage couple, Lizzie and Ricky!) Season 3 can't come soon enough!

When is the season 3 release date?

On Friday, May 28, Netflix announced that new episodes will be releasing on July 9! After December and November release dates for seasons 1 and 2, this summer date is a pleasant surprise for fans who have been eagerly awaiting the show's return.

Is there a season 3 trailer?

Netflix released the trailer on June 11, and it looks so good! The third season promises much more drama, including "a funeral, a fire, a divorce, a hurricane and a new romance, in a twist-packed season that'll keep fans on the edge of their seats." We can't wait!

Will the entire cast return for season 3?

Yes, your favorite cast members will be coming back for the new season! Alexandra Breckinridge will return as Mel, Martin Henderson as Jack, and of course, Tim Matheson (Doc), Annette O'Toole (Hope), Colin Lawrence (Preacher), Benjamin Hollingsworth (Brady), Grayson Gurnsey, Lauren Hammersley, Sarah Dugdale, Jenny Cooper, Daniel Gillies, Chase Petriw, Marco Grazzini and more of your favorite Virgin River locals.

We'll also be introduced to two new characters: Brie (played by Zibby Allen), and Tara (played by Stacey Farber). Brie is Jack's sister, a spunky lawyer, and Tara is Lilly's daughter, who has been helping her mother take care of baby Chloe.
