Will There Be a Season 2 of 'East New York'?

If you’ve been watching East New York’s debut season, chances are you’re clamoring for any news about its potential renewal. The CBS procedural follows Brooklyn, New York's 74th precinct located in, you guessed it, East New York, centering around the life and work of Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren).

With a diverse cast of industry newbies and veterans (including one Jimmy Smits), the series has resonated with audiences since its premiere, when it pulled the largest seven-day audience of any new series at the start of the 2022-23 season. But will it live to see another Fall TV lineup?

Here is everything to know about East New York Season 2.

Will there be a Season 2 of East New York?

As of this writing, the fate of freshman CBS series East New York is unknown. CBS has not renewed or canceled the series, which can be seen as both good and bad news. The good news is the series clearly has enough traction behind it where it hasn’t been outright canceled. The bad news is CBS doesn’t have enough confidence in the show to back it for a second season just yet (or it doesn't have the right deal in hand). We'll update this page as soon as we know more.

East New York is a police procedural centered around the 74th precinct of East New York in Brooklyn. The precinct is led by the newly promoted Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, a native to the neighborhood who has high hopes that her squad can become a part of the community that they protect and serve.

Haywood has her work cut out for her as she earns the confidence and respect of her fellow officers and superiors, many of whom are either skeptical of her promotion or resistant to the changes she wants to make—or both. The neighborhood she oversees sits on the edge of Brooklyn, at the intersection of working-class people who have been there for generations and wealthier transplants who are pushing out the existing families thanks to gentrification. Haywood fights throughout the first season to ensure that everyone receives the same resources and care from her team.

Early on in the series, a prisoner serving a life sentence escapes and goes after Haywood—the cop who put him away—giving us a glimpse into her life prior to the start of the series. We also get peeks into the personal lives of Haywood's officers and how their own relationships with the community affect how they work their cases.

Overall, the show shines a spotlight on the idea of police reform through community policing.

Where is East New York filmed?

Many series set in New York City and its boroughs are shot outside of the area, but East New York actually films in and around the community it purports to represent.

"What’s so great about filming here is that we're in East New York and then around it, you really get the sense of what the community's like," Warren told Entertainment Tonight.

"There’s really beautiful people here, really beautiful parks and recreation, and activities to do. And we want to highlight that on the program."

Is the 74th precinct in East New York real?

No. In real life, East New York is served by the 75th precinct.

Who will be cast in Season 2 of East New York?

The series hasn't been renewed for a second season (yet), so we can't say for sure who would be cast in the next installment. But assuming it's a go, the Season 2 cast would likely include:

Amanda Warren (Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood)

Regina Haywood is the main character of East New York, so it is likely she would return for a second season. Viewers would get to see Haywood continue her journey to lead the 7-4 in a way that truly serves the community.

Jimmy Smits (Chief John Suarez)

Chief John Suarez is not just Haywood’s boss, he’s also her mentor. He's a highly respected and decorated commanding officer, but his experience can sometimes make him resistant to change. Although he and Haywood have a good relationship, they butt heads at various points because of their differing ideas.

Officer Marvin Sandeford is a seasoned training officer and East New York expert. His experience makes him resistant to Haywood's approach.

Detective Tommy Killian is an old-school detective who prefers to stick to traditional thinking when it comes to police work. As a result, he rejects Haywood’s new ideas.

Richard Kind (Captain Stan Yenko)

Spin City alum Richard Kind plays Captain Stan Yenko, Haywood’s right-hand man. Arguably the comic relief of the series, Yenko is supportive of Haywood’s new ideas for the precinct and enthusiastically works to help implement them.

Elizabeth Rodriguez (Detective Crystal Morales)

Orange Is the New Black's Elizabeth Rodriguez is Detective Crystal Morales. The officer may have great instincts when it comes to detective work, but she doesn’t always follow the rules. Because of this, she and Haywood are occasionally at odds.

Olivia Luccardi (Officer Brandy Quinlan)

Though she is at the bottom of the pile as a patrol officer, Officer Brandy Quinlan is quite ambitious—even volunteering to live in a local housing project within the precinct. She believes in Haywood’s vision and enthusiastically does what she can to help bring it to life. Her growing relationship with Officer Andre Bentley is also an interesting facet of her character.

Trainee Officer Andre Bentley is also enthusiastic about his chance to make a difference in the community, despite his upper-middle class upbringing setting him apart from its long-time inhabitants. Being new to the police force, he bonds with Officer Brandy Quinlan and eagerly learns from his training superior Officer Sandeford.
