Searcy elementary students get new bikes

SEARCY, Ark. – Students in Searcy became the lucky recipients of bicycles thanks to a donation.

The young students at Sidney Deener Elementary School were treated to the bikes thanks to Walmart and the non-profit group Wish For Wheels.

Wish For Wheels founder Greg Appel was excited to get the bikes to their future riders.

“We are a non-profit based out of Denver, Colorado and we give new bikes and helmets to second graders in low-income schools,” Appel said. “Every one of you get to take home a free bike and helmet today.”

Principal Jeff Graham loved the generosity toward his students.

“I think it is really awesome that Walmart stepped up in what they did,” Graham said. “Searcy is really a strong community and I think these partnerships show it, We’re always partnering with different outside community agencies, and we are always doing what’s best for our kids and families. I think this is just another way we can show that.”

Appel said he knows the importance of a bicycle for a kid growing up.

“So, this bike is freedom, right? It’s responsibility, adventure, but it’s community, right?” Appel said. “They all get to be together and it’s so liberating for these kids to have something that is brand new, that is just for them that Walmart now has built and provided just for them and to be able to connect together that way.”
