Representative Maxine Waters, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, and chef Jose Andres were just a few of the boldfaced names to attend and be honored at Sean Penn’s CORE gala last night. The annual event—previously called the JP / HRO gala—raises funds to support aid and infrastructure initiatives in Haiti, and last night saw the evening tally more than $3.5 million. Master of ceremonies Jamie Foxx took the lead and got the audience excited for the programs that included a live auction and performances from Macy Gray, Billie Eilish, and Yusuf Islam.

But it was the words from the speakers—Anderson Cooper, Julia Roberts, and Penn himself—that resonated most with the glittering crowd ahead of this evening’s Golden Globe awards.
