Sea New York RTW Fall 2021

With its contemporary price points and blend of feminine sportswear silhouettes with signature quilting squares, crochet and tie-dye details, Sea New York has been on a roll, garnering attention from influencers and celebrity fans Yara Shahidi, Kate Bosworth, Emma Roberts and more, introducing kids in 2020 and their first brand collaboration coming up later in 2021.

For fall, designer Monica Paolini focused more on outerwear, “because of outdoor dining and being outside so much more,” she said, noting brisk sales of the Paloma quilted coat last fall. “So we just expanded it into trying to do our version of the puffer coat with eyelet details, patchwork nylon windbreakers for our version of a North Face jacket, and fleece.”

“Pre-COVID-19, our partners were growing their business with us…and even with everything that happened, they still wanted to hold hands,” she said, noting retail orders have remained steady or increased for fall.

The look: Sport cozy with a handcraft touch.

Quote of note: “From being in quarantine, we’ve been thinking about what people have been doing at home, with quilting bees and granny squares and needlepoint and tie-dye — and doing a lot of Etsy searches to figure out how we can do things differently, and use a granny square to make a sleeve, for example,” said Paolini, who joined forces with Sean Monahan to launch the label in 2009. (He runs the business side.) “We also did all these knit intarsias inspired by the 1980s and Princess Diana,” she said of sweaters with pastoral scenes, sweet floral or strawberry embroideries.

Standout pieces: Black-and-white zigzag-quilted fabric coat; fleece jacket with patchwork floral fabric trim; black quilted puffer coat with eyelet hem; black parka with eyelet portrait collar; denim, zip-front puff-sleeve dress; cotton eyelet dresses, tops and trenchcoats with oversize frilly, rounded collars.

The takeaway: Easy, everyday-wearable, but with the warmth of handcraft, this collection should continue to put wind in Sea New York’s sails.
