Sea of Stars, the indie turn-based RPG that’s been gathering a lot of attention lately, has reportedly sold over 100,000 copies in just one day. The game was first announced in 2020 with a very successful Kickstarter campaign, but was only released yesterday.

Sea of Stars is an old-school turn-based RPG inspired by games like Illusion of Gaia, Breath of Fire, and Chrono Trigger. It was released to almost universal acclaim from the press, with it receiving metascores in the 90s on review score aggregator Metacritic. Critics have praised the game for its pixel art visuals, inventive battle system, and similarities to games like the widely beloved Golden Sun and Chrono Trigger.

The game was developed by Sabotage Studio, which previously developed The Messenger, an action platformer game inspired by another classic series, Ninja Gaiden. Sea of Stars is actually set in the same universe as The Messenger, but takes a very different approach to both genre and storytelling tone.

Sea of Stars selling so many copies in one day on sale is a testament to how well received it’s been, given players on most platforms could play it at no extra cost. The game is available to PS4 and PS5 players via PlayStation Plus Catalog, and Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC players via Game Pass. The only platform where it’s not included in a subscription service is the Nintendo Switch, which doesn’t typically offer non-retro games as part of its paid online service. It was the first game ever to launch on both PS Plus and Game Pass at the same time.

It’s also surprising given the price of the game. At full price, Sea of Stars costs $34.99 in the US on Switch, with prices being marginally different on other platforms. Other indie games of a similar scope typically try to aim for the $20 price point or below, so it’s good to see players buying in despite the high price.

Sea of Stars is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
