The amount of hens affected is devasting. According to the CDC, as of January 11, 2023, the number of poultry killed by the avian flu is 57,832,154. This is less than a year's time since the outbreak first started in February of 2022. With losing so many egg-producing hens, it's no wonder there is such an egg shortage.
Unfortunately, that egg shortage has sent prices soaring. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current average price for a carton of eggs is just over $4 a carton. Thankfully, the USDA reports that, on average, the prices are slowly coming down after the holiday demand. But some areas of the U.S., like Texas, are more affected by the egg shortage than others.
