You know when you hear someone say that a pro is "Your favorite skier's favorite skier"? It's a classic adage that describes those who are so good at skiing that, in their presence, fellow professionals are reduced to mere fans.

Shane McConkey was one of those next-level skiers.

In this clip, Scot Schmidt -- another legend -- describes the impact that McConkey had on our shared sport.

I have to admit Schmidt and his skiing were a bit before my time. I can't pretend to fully understand the role he played in freeskiing because I didn't live it -- so I'll leave my comments for Schmidt as a tip of the hat and a thank you. Anyways, if you grew up as a fan of Schmidt, you don't need me to tell you what a bad*ss he is. That much is already known.

As for McConkey, I came of age as he was putting out his final Matchstick Productions parts before his passing -- he was one of those skiers you felt you knew even though you hadn't met him.

I credit that trait of his to the outsized influence he had over skiing. His fun-loving attitude, technical innovations, and gnarly stunts are still present with all of us during any given day on the hill -- that's what leaving a legacy looks like. Thanks for everything, Shane.
