NBA rookie Scoot Henderson’s debut Puma signature sneaker was a personal project for the Portland Trail Blazer guard, as he worked closely with his family in creating the style.

On Thursday, Puma is unveiling the style alongside the NBA rookie, who is the 10th player to receive a signature sneaker during his first season in the league. Titled the Scoot Zeros Georgia Peach, Henderson — who is one of seven children — explained he worked with his whole family for the sneaker’s design process.

“The reason I teamed up with Puma to have my signature sneaker is because of how much they believed in me and how family-oriented they are,” Henderson said. “That is the person I am. Also on the product side, they are so involved in the culture; they mix basketball and culture together. Their fashion and culture caught my eye, and they gave me creative freedom to make the sneaker that I wanted.”

Growing up, Puma was a brand that Henderson resonated with on and off the basketball court. He named the Puma Suede sneakers, specifically an all red pair, as his “all-time favorite shoes.”

Henderson’s debut Puma sneaker is an homage to his home state of Georgia, with the shoe’s peach hue meant as a nod to the Georgia peach. There’s also a green formstrip that’s said to “denote how fast the sneaker can make you.” He also explained the sneakers are meant to symbolize his motto of “Overly Determined to Dominate.” The sneakers are priced at $100 and will be available for purchase starting Dec. 15.

“The meaning behind these specific shoes is to continue to be O.D.D. and maximize your day and continue to be confident,” he said. “I encourage everyone to believe in themselves, and that philosophy comes through with this specific shoe and the colorways, along with the edginess of the design. I am confident that no one has ever seen a shoe like this before.”

Prior to joining the Portland Trail Blazers this season, Henderson was the youngest player in the NBA’s G League, which is the official minor league organization. Henderson was the third pick in this year’s NBA draft.

“My first NBA season is going pretty well, and I am still adapting to all of the traveling,” he said. “That said, the NBA G League was an incredible opportunity for me to learn and play before entering the league and playing with the Portland Trail Blazers. Now, I am on a much, much bigger stage, and finding my groove in my adopted hometown.”

Henderson sees his partnership with Puma continuing because of their shared values, and is excited to see what other projects they will embark on.

“I see the collaboration with Puma continuing to grow and blossom because we have a mutual respect and appreciation for each other,” he said. “Without a doubt we will continue to create new, interesting and innovative products together. Not only have they been very respectful toward my entire family, which is crucial, they treat all of their athletes with the utmost respect. From my experience, Puma goes above and beyond, and the sky’s the limit for us.”
